Coppery Crawlies

Captivated by copper's warm, autumnal color and its malleable qualities, Catherine Murphy and her team have transformed this ubiquitous metal--used to create American's smallest coinage, the penny--into one-of-a-kind artworks. Using a hammer, vise, anvil, and oxy-acetylene torch, they fold, forge, and anneal copper transforming it into a three-dimensional interpretation of a playful praying mantis. Propped on an extra tall garden stake, this rare critter will be easy to spot as he peers over your yard or garden, greeting visitors with his enchanting, hand-crafted character. Handmade in North Carolina.

North Carolina

“Like attracts like, as well as inspires it.”

Growing up in a military family, Catherine Murphy spent her childhood discovering new places around the world and every locale's characteristic outdoor sites. Each time she sits down to create a new piece, however, the metalworker pictures it living in her favorite place in the world: "a fabulous garden," she says, adding that she's "amazed and inspired by life in the garden.”

Her nature-themed wire copper sculptures only serve to make the green spaces themselves more amazing. In fact, it’s that merging of her two loves that "feeds my soul and keeps me motivated," she says. And if the North Carolina resident ever gets stuck, all she needs to do is go outside. "When those moments come up, my go-to spot is a bench by the river," she says. "Living in the mountains and working beside a river make for a wealth of inspiration."

I like the look of this fellow, and I like that he is big enough to see easily when placed in the border. The leaf has a nice patina applied to it. However, I cannot give the product full marks for two reasons. First, the very thin stake provided is flimsy and has no anchoring "foot" (that double prong at the bottom that you often see on bird-feeder or hose stands), so in my sandy soil I have to push it in quite deep to get any hold. That means the ornament stands much lower than I would like. Second, the way it was packaged for shipping is ridiculously bad. The decorative section was wrapped in one sheet of bubble wrap, while the stake was not padded and was loosely secured to the inside of the box with clear packing tape. The flimsy box arrived crushed on one end (fortunately the empty end) and falling apart. It took me ages to get the packing tape off of the stake (imagine removing super-sticky packing tape that had been wrapped around and around a wire clothes hanger, and you will get the idea). The feelers and other bits of the mantis were bent up and needed to be straightened out. How hard would it be to add some balled-up newspaper or something to the package?

Paired with the copper bats, the copper mantis is going to be quite stunning. My disabled mother spends a lot of time on the back porch or by the back window looking out. What a lovely addition it will be for her garden.

Added the praying mantis stake to a backyard pollinator garden - both as a visual/fun garden piece and to keep my towering dill and fennel plants upright. The copper is beautiful and attracts butterflies, bees and the like.

My friend has a tasteful, not overboard, number of art items in her well manicured, abundantly flowered yard and this was a perfect addition to it. She found a perfect place and her comment was, "when Mr Mantis gets tired of this spot I know he will easily find another spot because he is so at home here with me"
