Iowa City siblings Zach and Zeb Wahls were inspired to create this original card deck by some back-and-forth campaign talk between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton in 2016. When Trump accused Clinton of playing the "woman card," Clinton responded, "If fighting for women's health care, paid family leave, and equal pay is playing the woman card, then deal me in!"

Zach heard this, and the proverbial light bulb flashed. Woman card? How about 52 of them, bearing original illustrations of trailblazing American women? Having watched Zeb—an art student—work on sketches of Clinton, he knew she was the one to draw them.

Each woman appears in all four suits, except the Jokers—Lucille Ball and Phyllis Diller. Her rank or number corresponds to a fact from her biography. For example, the Ace—"1" card—is Hillary Clinton, the first and only woman Presidential nominee from a major American political party. The King is Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman elected to Congress, who began her political career representing King's County (Brooklyn).

The included instructions have links to a website where you can learn more about each woman. Drawn in Iowa. Manufactured in Texas.

“My sister crushed it. The artwork, the design of the box, every single detail started with her.”

Iowa City-based sister and brother Zeb and Zach Wahls are a pair of aces. Zeb, Art Director of the Woman Cards, was already a staff illustrator for the Daily Iowan while she was a fine art major at the University of Iowa. She spent about 20 hours apiece on these 15 striking portraits of American women who changed the world, including Eleanor Roosevelt, Sojourner Truth, Gertrude Stein, and more. Her brother Zach became a nationally known advocate for LGBT rights after giving a speech to the Iowa legislature on the subject in 2011. In 2012, he published a memoir, My Two Moms: Lessons of Love, Strength, and What Makes a Family, which became a New York Times bestseller. “Making these cards is an opportunity to pay homage to this incredible group of women who have accomplished so much," says Zach, "even when the deck was stacked against them—pun 100 percent intended—and also to create some incredible art."

Comments about UncommonGoods Woman Card Playing Deck:

I bought these for the women in my family - mom, aunts, cousins - that are remarkable and talented and immensely capable. Politics aside, it's great to have a stack of female leaders, innovators and glass ceiling breakers to show the next generation.
