Swivel and Strum

Ever heard of a folding guitar? We hadn't either, until Cory Tang came along. His innovative approach to the instrument may not have a traditional body, but it does boast 19 frets, a space-saving design, and the ability to suit left- and right-handed players, plus a little button for the cross-body strap of your choice. Small enough to travel with ease, the guitar's patented rotating arm, made from American maple, rests comfortably against your body, reducing bulk. And yes—it sounds just like a regular acoustic specimen, with a fingerboard made from Indonesian rosewood. It's just, you know… a whole lot easier to carry. And cool-looking, we think. Handmade in Taiwan.

Cory Tang has been at this whole “guitar” thing a while. In 2001, he began studying classical guitar at Tunghai University in Taichung, Taiwan; by 2008, he’d embarked on a journey to become a luthier: a fancy word for “somebody who makes guitars.” Appropriate, no? His first product, the Folding Travel Guitar, ditches tradition in favor of flexibility and design-conscious cool, making it easier than ever to take your tunes to go.

Comments about UncommonGoods Folding Travel Guitar:

I got this to keep up with my practice when traveling. I also have taken it to the office to practice during lunch. Great for practice, as it only make enough sound for me to hear. No worry about folks in the next hotel room or the next office over. But for this reason, it is only good for practice. Beautiful craftsmanship. Folds up small and easy to carry. It takes a little experimentation to learn how best to hold it (I hold 'Spanish Classic' style.) A tacky cloth on your leg can help hold it so it doesn't slip off. If you want a guitar for travel practice, this is great.

Comments about UncommonGoods Folding Travel Guitar:

I like everything about it except I haven't yet found a comfortable way to hold it while I'm sitting. I'm only 5'3" so maybe it would fit someone bigger better. When I use the cross-piece as shown, my picking/strumming hand is uncomfortable. If I try leaving it folded, my strumming forearm gets in the way of the strings. Still, if you don't have space, desperately need an acoustic guitar, and have this amount of money available, it's worth trying. I'm glad I have it.
