My mom's having a difficult time using this crossbody chain for her iphone. Should she detach the metal piece (oval shaped) from the cardboard and then slip in to fit at the bottom of her phone and then pop the cover back on?

That is correct. It will fit cases with a charging opening of at least 3/8".
