What Makes It Uncommon

Tootie Fruitie

Polly may want a cracker, but Robins, Orioles, Cardinals, and many more highly-coveted bird guests prefer fruit. Hang Catherine Murphy’s handmade copper feeder from a tree or stake, stick fresh or dried fruit on the four prongs, and attract these flying frugivores (a fancy word for "fruit eaters") to your yard or garden. Bliss for them—and for the bird lover or gardener you give it to. Handmade in Asheville, North Carolina.

Catherine Murphy

location

North Carolina

Growing up in a military family, Catherine Murphy spent her childhood discovering natural beauty around the world. But whenever she creates a new piece, she imagines it living in her favorite place: "a fabulous garden," she says, adding that she's "amazed and inspired by life in the garden." Her nature-themed copper sculptures are made to enhance green spaces. It's the merging of her two loves that "feeds my soul and keeps me motivated," she says. If she ever gets stuck, she heads out into the nature around her North Carolina home. "My go-to spot is a bench by the river," she says. "Living in the mountains and working beside a river make for a wealth of inspiration."
