Hi,
Diane DiRaimo's unique earrings are sure to stop traffic. After all, they did it for years in former lives. Their red, yellow, and blue-green "gems" are made from authentic New York City glass traffic light lenses, scrapped when plastic ones replaced them in the 1960s. Diane breaks them into shards, polishes them in a rock tumbler, and crafts them into vividly colored, slightly translucent earrings. The resulting pieces are fresh and original, yet mysteriously familiar in that "Where have I seen this before?" way. Compatible with lots of different looks and styles, they"re also great conversation starters—not, despite their former job, stoppers. Handmade in New York City.

Self-taught jewelry artist Diane DiRaimo loves turning intriguing found objects and materials into creative and original jewelry. Born in Erie, Pennsylvania, she’s been making jewelry and selling it at various crafts fairs in New York City, where she lives, for 15 years. After a long and fruitful time working with sea glass, she started wondering if there was a material she could use that, like sea glass, is recycled, but with more varied and bright colors. One day, sitting in her car at a red light, inspiration struck. “I wondered if the [traffic light] lenses were made from glass,” she says. “I found out the glass lenses were replaced by plastic in the 1960s. I acquired some old glass lenses, and ran with it.” (Note: she is not talking about running the red light.)
