Story Cup

Melissa Reddick is a ceramic artist and the owner of Modern History Clay Works in Davidson, North Carolina. After earning a degree in Fine Art and a Master's Degree in Museum Education, Reddick worked as a potter and educator, often teaching wheel techniques to students out of her own studio. Her work took a dramatic turn when she inherited a very special box containing vintage family papers and photographs which spanned several generations. After weeks spent captivated by the contents of the box, she saw within the fragmented memories of the past a clear vision into her future as an artist. Scribbled grocery lists, worn diaries, green stamps, wadded trolley tickets, portraits of children who had long ago become grandparents themselves, report cards, ancient deeds of land, and a young soldier's love letters each seemed to whisper a tiny part of a larger story. She felt compelled to create a new kind of art that celebrated the moments lived by her family. Her vision to create handmade clay pieces that featured personal images was uniquely challenging and could not be achieved through commonly used techniques. Through a series of trial and error, she arrived on a new process which combined elements from ceramics, printmaking, and photography and the Goldies' Collection was born.
