What Makes On the Rocks Adventure Sculpture Uncommon

A great day outdoors eventually becomes a story. Here, it becomes a landscape too. John Davis gathers natural rock from around the United States—with a special fondness for weathered Vermont stone—and uses it to form mountains, trails, and rugged terrain for miniature stainless steel hikers, cyclists, and skiers. John individually selects and cuts each rock, and then carefully positions every figure and detail to capture the movement of the sport. No two stones follow quite the same path, making each sculpture a one-of-a-kind tribute to the places where adventure happens.

For John Davis, the thrill of outdoor sports and the satisfaction of building things have always gone hand in hand. After a career as a teacher and administrator, he found a new way to bring those passions together in stone and steel. Each sculpture begins with the challenge of the rock itself: John breaks, cuts, and polishes massive pieces, then searches for the precise angle where a steel figure can spring into action. A skier's descent, a climber's ascent, even the placement of a tree is carefully considered to make each scene feel true to the sport. Largely self-taught, John has spent 15 years refining his craft through experimentation, mistakes, and an eye for detail.
