A Warm Welcome

Some like their arrivals heralded with the sound of trumpets, some prefer something a little more soothing. Beautifully hand crafted from maple, padauk and canary wood, this ethereal harp by Bob Murphy emits a trio of tranquil notes as the hanging mallets hit the wire. The natural wood grain creates a uniquely organic instrument, while the fluid silhouette creates an eye-catching display when hung. Hang on your door so every visitor gets a warm welcome. Handmade in Grass Valley, California.

Due to the handmade nature of this item, each is unique and will vary.

When Bob Murphy retired as a house builder, he repurposed his woodworking skills to craft door harps. “Now I make much more expensive sawdust with all the exotic hardwoods I use,” he jokes. To create that sawdust—and, of course, the stunning instruments that welcome guests with warm tones—he turns to his studio’s heavy-duty machines. Those multitasking behemoths “keep me motivated to design and create new items each year,” he says. And if the tools ever fail to move him, there are the views. Recently, the California-based artist relocated the equipment from his shop to his mountain home on five country acres. “It gets up to a foot of snow in the winter with a 50-mile, 180-degree view of surrounding pine and oak trees,” he says. “That is inspiring by itself.”

We almost returned this as it was difficult trying to figure how to hang it on our cut glass front door. If the keyhole would accept the thicker, upward turned hook on the new 3M clear stick~on hooks, voila! But here's what we did; put a small nail into the oak door, made a loop of fishing line, put a SHORT screw, HEAD FIRST tightly into the keyhole and wrapped the fishing line around the screw threads, tying it on. Then, a small clear/tan round of velcro on the back and stuck it to the glass. (o:

Very pretty piece of carpentry, but has its flaws. I purchased this many months ago, and put it aside pending a decision on how to hang it on my (custom) wood door -- reluctant to drive a nail in. Then I discovered 3M Command Strips (awesome things), and finally hung it. Well, the percussive sound that was high, bright, clear and crisp when I bought the harp was gone. I used the tuning tool to tighten the lax strings as much as I dared, but even though the sound improved -- the notes now higher, sharps instead of flats -- it was still quite dulled. I could barely hear it. So I fiddled with the tuning again, and one string broke with a pop. I was able to restring it (bloodied my fingers badly on the sharp wire). When I got it fully tightened, the original, bright sound was back. So I very carefully tightened the other strings. They both broke. When those were restrung they were louder, brighter, crisper. So buyer beware, these strings apparently suffer metal fatigue over time, and the sound will degrade. If they break there is enough extra wire wound around the pegs to restring them once, but wear safety goggles or large eyeglasses whenever you tune this harp!

A second issue is one of the wooden balls is strung in such a way that it does not bounce on its corresponding wire as the others do. It hangs from a static peg that is not adjustable, and the string emerges from a hole slightly on the side of the peg rather than the bottom. So the ball hits the wire incorrectly. That means I get only two repeating notes when the door is opened.

Would not buy this again.

      Comments about UncommonGoods Door Harp:

We had to put a spacer between the door and the harp so the ball hung down away from the harp and would ring when the door was opened. Our door has a soft close hinge so that might have been our problem.

The harp is beautiful to look at and is capable of making a lovey sound. However, I'm truly disappointed that it fails to "plink" when anyone opens or closes the front door. The harp is mounted snugly, so I want to blame the door: maybe it's too heavy, or it swings too smoothly. In any case, the little wooden balls on the harp don't swing enough to make any sound, even though they're hanging freely.

I received one of these 30 years ago as a wedding gift. It has hung on my front door ever since: greeting guests and reminding us, every time we enter and leave, of our love for each other, our wedding day, and the thoughtful friends who gave us this gift.
