What Makes It Uncommon

Remember how exciting it was to get a note passed to you in class? Or predict the future with a paper square carefully folded by your best friend? Those days return in Saori Matsushita's beautifully nostalgic porcelain art. Using the Nerikomi technique—a traditional Japanese ceramic handbuilding method—Saori embeds the familiar ruled lines of notebook paper into the porcelain itself. She then folds the thinly sliced porcelain sheets as if working with actual paper, and assembles them by hand. Available in two classic styles, each piece celebrates the connections and memories that stay with us long after the school bell rings.

Saori Matsushita's work bridges contemporary art and traditional ceramics, blending reflection with meticulous craftsmanship. Born and trained in Japan, she first studied sculpture before discovering that clay offered the ideal language for her ideas. While her formal education provided a foundation, years of self-directed study deepened her understanding of the medium. Now working from a small studio on her Seattle-area property, Saori handcrafts each porcelain piece from start to finish. Inspired by literature, childhood memories, and everyday objects, she creates understated forms that preserve fleeting emotions in clay.
