The Experience

You know and love every inch, whisker, and adorable quirk of your pet. That's why—even without drawing skill or art experience—you're the best artist to paint their portrait. Yes, really. Join Oklahoma artist Addie Stunkard for a live virtual class where you’ll learn how to create a painting of your best bud that’ll be worthy of a fancier-than-the-fridge display.

  • Using a black-and-white printer paper photo of your pet, you’ll work in pencil to transfer (not trace) the outline onto watercolor paper.
  • Addie will demonstrate basic painting techniques and you’ll put them into practice right away as you color in your portrait.
  • You’ll probably complete your masterpiece during class, but you may want to leave time afterwards to brush in those finishing touches.

Class length: 2 hours
We suggest: Skip a trip to the craft store and add our optional Watercolor Paint Kit, Set of 36 Colors to your purchase of this class; in addition to the paints, it comes with 10 art brushes and watercolor paper.

About

Growing up in a large family surrounded by music and art, Addie Stunkard always knew she wanted to be an artist. She studied watercolor painting and illustration at Oklahoma State and after a stint in marketing, she launched her graphic design business. Along with her design work, she shares her passion for art by teaching. "I feel like painting can be seen as such an intimidating concept," she says. "My goal is for someone who's never picked up a brush before to walk away with something beautiful."

You'll need a watercolor palette with eight to twelve colors, a 140-lb watercolor cold-pressed paper, one large and one small round brush, a black-and-white printed photo of your pet on a regular printer paper (Make sure you have this before class. The size of the print will be the size of your finished painting), a pencil, some paper towels, a cup for water, and a hair dryer (to dry watercolor layers quickly). If you'd like, you can make a playlist to listen to while you draw and paint (with your Zoom muted during class).

I discovered a hidden talent!

I haven't played around with watercolors in 20 years, so I had no idea what I was doing going into the class. The instructor, Addie, did a fabulous job explaining the basic watercolor techniques before getting into the portraits. I loved that she does portraits for shelter dogs, and it was one of those she painted alongside us. My dog is all black with super curly hair, and I was overwhelmed at first by where to start. She gave me some great advice that I was able to run with. Though I didn't finish the portrait during class, I was able to finish within about 30 minutes afterward. Everyone who has seen the finished product was blown away! I give all the credit to Addie! In fact, I decided to use the techniques she taught me to do another portrait for my mom's dog, and she LOVED it! I plan on continuing to do this as a hobby, and maybe even volunteer to paint shelter dogs like Addie. The only thing I would change is the number of people in the class. It's not like mine had a crazy amount of people (maybe about 10), but it meant that Addie was limited to more general instruction. Since I'm already an artist of other mediums, it was probably easier for me to learn what I needed within the 2-hour time period; however, I imagine that those without any artistic background may have more trouble with the lack of individual attention/instruction inherent to larger classes. Either capping the class size to 3-5 people or extending the class time would be very helpful in that way. Regardless, I had a great time! Even better, I found a hidden talent that I had no idea about prior to this class. It was 1000% worth my time and money and I'd do it again in a second. Thank you Addie!

This is a great fun class!

I had a blast doing this class. My husband got it for me for my birthday. You don't need watercolor experience before taking this class either. I didn't finish my portrait during the class because I was having too much fun painting the details! I'm excited to get this one over the finish line and got the hardest part done during the class.

I ENJOYED THE PAINTING CLASS!

I WAS GIFTED THIS CLASS FROM MY WIFE FOR VALENTINES DAY, SHE IS ALWAYS LOOKING FOR CREATIVE GIFTS. SHE NAILED IT.

The best gift

I hadn't picked up watercolors in 20 years, but over the past few months my best friend and I have been trying to reconnect with the art we loved to make when we were younger. She got me this class as a 40th birthday gift so we could take it together and it was the perfect way for us to connect from a few states away and learn something fun together.

Fun to do - Difficult to finish within the two hours

The approach really does allow beginners to have a good experience with a pretty good result. The instruction overall is very good. Though its actually pretty challenging to finish within the two hours especially if you need to spend time blending/mixing colors to get a match for your pet, especially if you don't have a white or black pet. Here are tips I wish I had known: - Photo selection - easiest is to pick a largely headshot, and do a 8x10. Better impact and easier on timing. - Make sure you have a good relatively sharp #2 pencil to do your photo tracing for your painting

Really helpful and fun

Great class. I'm no artist but found the technique explanations and hints very helpful and the behind the scene banter was very entertaining. I need more practice to get anywhere near the instructors skill and confidence, but great way to spend rainy morning

DO NOT take this class if you are a beginner

Nothing against the instructor, but if you don't already know how to watercolor, this class will only frustrate you. You can't really watch what she's doing while you're working on your own painting. And she's also painting something completely different than you are, so whatever she is doing is of absolutely no help or guidance anyway. I ended up in tears. What a waste of two hours.

Response from merchant

I’m really sorry this class left you feeling frustrated and unsupported. Even if the instructor is kind, you should never come away feeling overwhelmed, especially to the point of tears. We’ve received a lot of positive feedback about this experience, but we take concerns like yours seriously, and we’ll share your notes with our team so we can review the format and expectations for beginners. We’re reaching out directly in case we can do more to help.

excellent class

I liked the first half the class explaining some various techniques before moving into the actual painting.

So much fun!

I purchased this class for me and my Mom, who lives in a different state, to do together. The time absolutely flew by. It was so much fun, and the instructor was great!! I highly recommend. This was my first painting class ever, and I look forward to continuing to explore the medium. It was so engaging and relaxing. I didn't finish the paining during the class time, but continued to work on it afterwards.

Great Gift!

Was gifted the class for Christmas. Learned watercolor techniques and skills from home. Had a blast and love my pics!
