Their entrepreneurial a-ha moment came when Patrick bought a custom paint-by-numbers kit for his mom, only to be let down by the quality. With Peter’s mathematical brain on board, the pair refined a way to make art from photos—one that has been popular enough to allow the Columbus, Ohio–based business to move out of Peter’s home and into a brand-new studio.

I would probably buy this item again.

The quality of the item seems to be very good. The only downside is that the item is way too detailed. I think you could make a simpler paint by number canvas that would provide the result people probably want without 26 colors and so much detail. Some of the numbered areas are way too small. Probably will purchase again although I haven't finished the one I bought so I can't comment on the end product although it looks like it will be great. I've actually started skipping some of the smaller areas.

Great gift idea

My wife and have troubles buying each other Xmas presents as we've reached a point in our lives that is we want our need something we just go but it throughout the year. Having said that it is very difficult to find presents for Xmas! A friend told me about your website where I found the paint by number you all offer! What a wonderful "out of the box" idea!! So I got pix of our 2 grandchildren of 3 years and an 8 month old to you for the canvas. I can't wait to give this to my wife Bonnie Christmas morning!! Thank you so much for making my job easier lol!!

Interesting Gift

This is a very cool idea and gift, but I wish there were more instructions. For instance, how much water should I use and stuff like that. If you hold the paints also the number rubs off a little. But overall a great concept and product.

Really fun, but some paints were dry when I opened them.

At first I was really overwhelmed looking at all the different numbers and tiny little areas. I seriously considered using a magnifying glass. But once I got into it, it was so fun and rewarding. One star removed because a couple of the paints were really dry, even when I first cracked them open.

I would recommend this product to anyone with an eye for art

My wife bought me this product to create a painting of my grandson's picture. The product has everything you need to create a picture. My only suggestion is to have the canvas mounted before sending.

Love the idea, wish the image was clearer

I was skeptical because the reference photo for the final result was very low resolution but hoped it would still work...it's way too low resolution in my opinion. Looks like you put a pixelated blur filter on it. So just keep that in mind, and choose a picture you think will look good blurry. It's still a cute, personal gift.

Should canvas be stretched and stapled before or after painting? Is any prep needed to canvas before or after painting?

No prep is needed, before or after. However, if you wish to attach the canvas to a frame, the artist recommends doing that before painting.

The paint should remain fresh as long as it is stored in a cool dry place away from sunlight and the canisters are well-shut.

Any editing would need to happen prior to submitting the photo. The artist will create this item exactly as the photo is submitted.

While we can't tell you if a specific photo will work here are some tips on choosing a photo: Here are the things that you need to consider when selecting the perfect photo for your Custom Paint by Number kit: - Select a photo with good brightness, contrast, and sharpness. - The background shouldn’t be too cluttered, so that the focus of the painting would be the main figure instead of its surrounding. - Make sure that the photo is clear, not blurred. - If you’re selecting a photo of your pet, we highly recommend a close-up view, to make it more detailed and subject-focused. - Keep in mind the aspect and ratio of your photo. Since the available custom kits are 16 x 20 inches/40 x 50 cm, it is crucial to select a photo with a 4:5 or 5:4 aspect ratio, and for 12x15inches select a photo with 2:3 or 3:2 aspect ratio. And yes you would need a stretcher frame with each canvas, the artist leaves the extra fabric on each side so that it can be stretched with stretcher bars. You just need to measure the paintable dimensions (12x15 or 16x20, whichever size you purchased) and buy a stretcher-bar kit of those dimensions.
