What Makes It Uncommon

Science lesson incoming: It’s believed that the Greek mathematician and physicist Archimedes was the first to calculate that an object will float when the weight of water displaced equals the weight of the object (that’s why even giant ships can float). This copper gauge lets you witness Archimedes’ Principle in action every time it rains—and tells you how much of a soaking your garden got.

  • Known as a pluviometer to science types (the ones who’d get a kick out of all this Archimedes talk), the gauge features an internal tube that rises as the base fills with water.
  • The tube is marked in inches to measure rainfall.
  • Available in a patio-ready tabletop model, a mounted version, or on a garden stake; each features a base of brushed copper that makes a handsome accent in your garden.
  • The mounted option comes with installation materials (four screws), allowing you to securely fasten it to decks, railings, square posts, or fences.
  • Made in New Paltz, New York.

I have this rain gauge beside a simpler model. The plain one is registering almost half an inch, but this one has barely moved. Is there minimum it is capable of measuring?

Hello! The minimum measurement is about 1/4" to see the measurement from a distance. Also, if your gauge is showing results that are different from another gauge in close proximity and the results don't match, consider testing the calibration of each. To test your Copper Rain Gauge, remove the blue tube. Pour 2 tablespoons plus 1 scant teaspoon of water into the container and gently drop the blue tube back in. It should measure 1".

The gauge arrives with this info on a card! 'What's so cool about the World's Coolest Rain Gauge? Science, that's what! It's based on the Archimedean principle of water displacement. Water flows into the outer sleeve and the blue tube floats up.'

Hello! The inner measurement tube is polycarbonate, the same material from which they make motorcycle windshields — it’s very tough! And the copper part withstands freezing temps too!
