Long Distance Love

Light up a loved one's life—across town or across the country—with two or more of these in-sync lamps. When you turn one on with a simple touch of your hand, its mate emits the same ambient glow, no matter where it is and who is on the other end: Parent or grandparent, niece or nephew, or long-distance significant other. Each person sets up their lamp via Wi-Fi, then reaches out and touches the lamp whenever they want to let their loved one know they're thinking of them. No need to choose a color: with every touch, the lamp cycles through a rainbow of them, one at a time. Designed by John Harrison and Vanessa Whalen. Assembled in Kansas.

Sold individually or in pairs (make your choice in the pull-down quantity menu).

“I see magic everywhere I look, but making something—then I get to touch the magic.”

When John Harrison and Vanessa Whalen first met, John was Associate Professor of Violin at Wichita State University and Vanessa was a pianist accompanying his students. Instantly friends, they did not start dating until many years later. By then, John had developed a second career as an electrical and computer engineer and Vanessa was a psychotherapist in private practice. John proposed to Vanessa on Christmas morning 2014 and their first touch lamps were also gifted that year. The two built them in their basement to connect John's family members spread out across the US and Canada. John now works with nonprofits to assemble the lamps while contributing back to the community. By marrying Vanessa, John also gained two sons, Brendan and Sean. The family now enjoys a blended household of dogs, as well as a small school of goldfish. John and Vanessa also founded a startup which develops mobile apps for kids to help them learn about and manage their feelings.

We have our lamp in our living room and are always delighted to see it start to glow. We originally bought two and gave one to my dad who had just been diagnosed with terminal cancer. It was an easy way to let him and his household know that we were thinking of him even though we were far away. We now have five. We stay connected with my daughter and her new husband, and are now in the process of adding our nephew and our daughter's in-laws to our network. The lamps themselves are very lovely and people often ask about them just because of their unique design. Truthfully I am surprised at how fond we have become of them, they have a way of becoming a wonderful part of the fabric of one's life.

I love the idea of letting somone they are being thought of!

It took some time to get my lamp set up. My friend still is working on setting up hers. I am anxious to see how they will work when set up is complete.

Comments about UncommonGoods Long Distance Touch Lamp:

Got this for father in law's 70th bday. Our toddler loves communicating with her grandpa on the other side of the country whenever she wants. She touches the light and shouts 'I love you Grandpa!' More attractive than it looks in the picture

My husband was leaving on a military deployment and I thought this would be a great way for our kids and myself to have a "moment" with him any time! We love being able to leave a "message" for him no matter what time it is here or where he is.

Comments about UncommonGoods Long Distance Touch Lamp:

My friend and I love this lamp. We can't stop touching it and I smile every time I come home/to my room and it has changed color. It's such a small thing but you feel so closely connected by it. Since my friend lives in the states and I live in Canada, it makes you forget how far away they are. It's amazing how it works and I am in love with it! It was a little tough to set up (especially for her since she set hers up in her university campus) but it was all so worth it, I love using it!

The holidays can't come soon enough!

Comments about UncommonGoods Long Distance Touch Lamp:

I bought this for my folks for the holidays (which are still a few months away) and I can't wait to give it to them! Of course, they're not too tech savvy so I set this up in advance for them, which was actually pretty easy. I was nervous after reading reviews from people about how hard it was but it wasn't at all for me. The biggest issue I had - and it was a pretty big issue - was that one of them just wasn't connecting to my wifi. I tried from different locations in my apartment over the course of an entire morning, probably 50-100 times, with no luck. I finally gave in and contacted the company. They responded super fast! They wanted some info and when I went to try again, lo and behold, it worked that time! (Go figure.) But now, both lights are set up and work perfectly. I can't wait to give the set to my folks over the holidays (and then take mine back home with me again). : ) I think they're going to love it - especially my mother who wants to talk to me every second of every day... I think this will help (and I anticipate my light changing every few minutes!). ; )

Comments about UncommonGoods Long Distance Touch Lamp:

I bought a set of these lamps for my mother's 60th birthday. My sister moved to Australia about 3 years ago and has been down under ever since. As any strong mother/daughter/parent/child relationship, my parents miss her immensely. Although there are visits, the opportunity to share the everyday moments of missing each other are sometimes hard to express due to time differences. Although it may just be another lamp in my parent's house, this lamp allows my mother/parents and sister to let them know all the small times they are thinking about one another. Often in our day to day lives, we forget to remind one another that they are loved and are never to far away. These lamps, bring my sister closer to my parents every day even though the distance stays the same.

In fact, my nephew's child care director purchased the lamps for her grandchildren who live across the country!

It took days to figure out how to get the lamps synced with each other. Plus it took forever to get them to find the wi-fi connection. They are wonderful once you figure out how to set them up. The instructions that come with the lamps are ridiculous!! We had to call customer service numerous times and sent many e-mails. I suggest you update the instructions so it is not so frustrating for people to figure them out.
