Long Distance Love

Light up a loved one's life—across town or across the country—with two or more of these in-sync lamps. When you turn one on with a simple touch of your hand, its mate emits the same ambient glow, no matter where it is and who is on the other end: Parent or grandparent, niece or nephew, or long-distance significant other. Each person sets up their lamp via Wi-Fi, then reaches out and touches the lamp whenever they want to let their loved one know they're thinking of them. No need to choose a color: with every touch, the lamp cycles through a rainbow of them, one at a time. Designed by John Harrison and Vanessa Whalen. Assembled in Kansas.

Sold individually or in pairs (make your choice in the pull-down quantity menu).

“I see magic everywhere I look, but making something—then I get to touch the magic.”

When John Harrison and Vanessa Whalen first met, John was Associate Professor of Violin at Wichita State University and Vanessa was a pianist accompanying his students. Instantly friends, they did not start dating until many years later. By then, John had developed a second career as an electrical and computer engineer and Vanessa was a psychotherapist in private practice. John proposed to Vanessa on Christmas morning 2014 and their first touch lamps were also gifted that year. The two built them in their basement to connect John's family members spread out across the US and Canada. John now works with nonprofits to assemble the lamps while contributing back to the community. By marrying Vanessa, John also gained two sons, Brendan and Sean. The family now enjoys a blended household of dogs, as well as a small school of goldfish. John and Vanessa also founded a startup which develops mobile apps for kids to help them learn about and manage their feelings.

We have our lamp in our living room and are always delighted to see it start to glow. We originally bought two and gave one to my dad who had just been diagnosed with terminal cancer. It was an easy way to let him and his household know that we were thinking of him even though we were far away. We now have five. We stay connected with my daughter and her new husband, and are now in the process of adding our nephew and our daughter's in-laws to our network. The lamps themselves are very lovely and people often ask about them just because of their unique design. Truthfully I am surprised at how fond we have become of them, they have a way of becoming a wonderful part of the fabric of one's life.

My best friend and I were very excited about our purchase of these lamp. She set hers up with little difficulty. Took me 2 days to set mine up. It's was very stressful and took the fun out of it.
Finally got it set up and connect with my friends lamp. We were in awe and it was fun again...till the next day... neither of our lamps would light up by touch. We have to call each other, unplug and replug lamp back in wait for it to boot up every time we use it.
My lamp you do have to physical touch with your Palm or the light will not change.
So basically it's going to be a dust collector.
We our both very sad about it because it was such a great idea.

Comments about UncommonGoods Long Distance Touch Lamp:

Such a unique way to just let someone know you are thinking of them without calling or texting. A simple way to make someone special smile unexpectedly. Only complaint is setting up the Wi-Fi connection ia not as easy as they make it seem. Make sure you use a Wi-Fi enabled tablet or laptop. Don't use your smart phone. And getting connected to the same group. Again not so simple. I have no suggestions to help on that one. Just keep.sending the group email invite until it works. Other than that, this is an amazing product.

Loved having something unique to give my mom who is always keeping in touch with us even when we are busy. It's a good way to let her know we are think of her even when it's too late to call. I didn't realize the lamps were plastic instead of glass, but from far away you can't tell.

Comments about UncommonGoods Long Distance Touch Lamp:

I loved, loved the idea of these lamps. I set one up in my own home and sent the other to my parents. Since they live far away, I wanted something to let them know I was thinking of them.

Setting up my own lamp was mildly frustrating -- it took somewhere between a half-dozen and a dozen tries over about 20 minutes, to get it to connect to our home wi-fi network. My parents are bringing in a friend who works as an IT professional to set up theirs, because despite the fact that they're tech savvy, it just won't connect easily to their wifi.

I was a little disappointed with the construction of the lamp. The plastic feels a little cheap (my parents have owned lovely glass & metal touch lamps, in the past, which is another reason I thought of this) and the edges aren't quite aligned on the lamp I kept, so I'm still tempted to gently squeeze it, to try and close the gaps. For the cost of the lamps, I'd expected more.

I think when I was setting it up, I was fully prepared to give it a much lower rating and even considered arranging to return them. It wasn't a fun experience and my parents still haven't successfully connected theirs. However, now that the little lamp is sitting in my corner, I'm very fond of it. I can't wait for my parents to get theirs set up. A few friends have commented on it and love the idea of it as much as I do -- they're planning to buy lamps of their own for friends/family on the far coast. So all told, I'm giving it 4 stars, just be warned, you might not agree with the review until it's set up and been in your room for a few days.

I bought this lamp for myself and my daughter as we live on opposites coasts. It was to be her Christmas gift but I was so excited with the Long Distance Touch Lamp I could not wait to give it to her - so it was Christmas in July! I love the colors, the look and the idea of saying 'Hello' to my daughter with just a touch of the lamp. It is such a wondering feeling to come home and see my lamp on as well. I believe this is one of the nicest and heart warming ways to say "I'm thinking about you!"
