Long Distance Love

Light up a loved one's life—across town or across the country—with two or more of these in-sync lamps. When you turn one on with a simple touch of your hand, its mate emits the same ambient glow, no matter where it is and who is on the other end: Parent or grandparent, niece or nephew, or long-distance significant other. Each person sets up their lamp via Wi-Fi, then reaches out and touches the lamp whenever they want to let their loved one know they're thinking of them. No need to choose a color: with every touch, the lamp cycles through a rainbow of them, one at a time. Designed by John Harrison and Vanessa Whalen. Assembled in Kansas.

Sold individually or in pairs (make your choice in the pull-down quantity menu).

“I see magic everywhere I look, but making something—then I get to touch the magic.”

When John Harrison and Vanessa Whalen first met, John was Associate Professor of Violin at Wichita State University and Vanessa was a pianist accompanying his students. Instantly friends, they did not start dating until many years later. By then, John had developed a second career as an electrical and computer engineer and Vanessa was a psychotherapist in private practice. John proposed to Vanessa on Christmas morning 2014 and their first touch lamps were also gifted that year. The two built them in their basement to connect John's family members spread out across the US and Canada. John now works with nonprofits to assemble the lamps while contributing back to the community. By marrying Vanessa, John also gained two sons, Brendan and Sean. The family now enjoys a blended household of dogs, as well as a small school of goldfish. John and Vanessa also founded a startup which develops mobile apps for kids to help them learn about and manage their feelings.

We have our lamp in our living room and are always delighted to see it start to glow. We originally bought two and gave one to my dad who had just been diagnosed with terminal cancer. It was an easy way to let him and his household know that we were thinking of him even though we were far away. We now have five. We stay connected with my daughter and her new husband, and are now in the process of adding our nephew and our daughter's in-laws to our network. The lamps themselves are very lovely and people often ask about them just because of their unique design. Truthfully I am surprised at how fond we have become of them, they have a way of becoming a wonderful part of the fabric of one's life.

I purchased two of these lamps, one for our home and one for my daughter, who is attending college far from home, for Christmas. She tends to get a little homesick and I thought this would be a perfect way to let her know we were thinking of her when she saw her lit lamp. Unfortunately, she got it to her dorm and found out it will not connect to public wifi. I never saw that listed in the description and wish I would have dug a little further before purchasing. This was her main Christmas gift and ended up being a disappointment. I wanted to write this review to let other parents know of this problem, as I would guess our situation is a fairly common one for purchasing these lamps.

Comments about UncommonGoods Long Distance Touch Lamp:

We (the grandchildren and I) love that we can send our love to each other whenever we want...they don't have to wait to use Mom or Dad's cell phone to call "Gramma".

Now Auntie, who lives in NYC, wants one too. We love the idea of all of us being connected. The Grandchildren want Gramma to have one in her office too so we can connect throughout the day!

We love that we can change the color of the light to fit any occasion, mood, etc. These are so touching and so easy to use!! It's truly a gift that keeps giving!!

I read a lot of reviews that mentioned this was hard to install.. I am not that tech savvy, but had absolutely NO trouble. My birth mom and I are having a heartwarming blast with this. We are both very busy people. She lives in Alaska, and we rarely get to see each other. This lamp has helped us feel connected...We can give it a tap and it is like sending a little kiss and hug to say hello! LOVE it! What a gift to us both!

I don't think i've ever written a review for anything in my life, but this was such a great buy. My girlfriend lives in Canada, while I live in the states. It is great being able to FaceTime but nothing is quite like being able to hold her hand, or hold her in my arms. This beautiful light gives me a way to show her I am there, without actually being able to be there.

I bought this for my whole family to send love to my sister without saying a word. She is fighting cancer, and we don't all live near each other. Everyone can send love, and if she feels up for it, she can send the love back. This is the greatest coolest gift I have ever given in my life.
The set up seems so simple, but was a challenge! (And we are all tech savvy.) I recommend the online set-up, not the download set up. Follow the steps and at the point where it asks you to set up the new network you need to understand that you must disable your computer (or iPad or mobile) from your wi-fi network and THEN connect the light to your computer (or iPad or mobile) as if the light is the new wi-fi network. THEN you need to connect back to your wi-fi network. Additionally, you can only set it up using a 2.4 router, not a 5. It was so simple that it was actually a challenge. (The steps don't explain WHY you are doing each step) We connected through both Mac and PC, and were successful after about 6 failed attempts at each house each time. You think we would have learned after the first house was set up. Still a great gift despite the set up headaches.

I bought two lamps - one for my parents, one for my newborn son. We live several thousands of miles apart, and they do not get to see him as often as they would like. When my mom opened the box and I explained what it was, she cried! We use it to say "goodnight" to Grammie and Grandpap, and as my son gets older it is awesome to watch his reactions to the rainbow colors - he loves to see it come on when my parents touch it to say "Hi". :)

My boyfriend and I are a bit older, creeping up on 50. He's not very cell phone-ish, so touching a light is much sweet, subtle and simpler. It truly warms my heart to see it light up. Works Great! Bit pricey though.
