“I like to keep the old jars I used when I first started. It reminds me of where this all started, and how humbled I am that people like the things I make.”

Everyone loves an insider wink, and bookworms will surely recognize Pemberley, Thornfield Garden, and 221B Baker Street–the names of some of Callie Meaney’s soy candles–as the sites of some time-tested literary adventures. (In this case, Pride & Prejudice, Jane Eyre, and Sherlock Holmes, respectively.)

“I was happy to find something that combined artistry (drawing the labels) and the act of making something,” Callie says of her Literary Candles, which she pours by hand in Valley Stream, New York. Initially a side project for the recently graduated English major, the candles quickly became a full-time calling. When she started to use books as inspiration for the scents, that’s when the demand for her scented creations grew and her business truly turned the page.

I bought two of these candles, Jane Eyre and Pride and Prejudice, one for myself and one as a gift to my college counselor, who loves classic literture as much as I do. Normally I am not a huge fan of floral scents and when I first smelt the candles I was nervous that they would be too soapy. I thought Thornfield Garden smelt the best and so I gave it as a gift and kept Pemberly for myself. My fears at an overpowering and soapy smell have been relieved now that I've lit Pemberly. It instead has a subtle freshness. I cannot say how Thornfield Garden burns but I'm sure it is equally as lovely.

I was really excited for this, I ordered the Sherlock Holmes one: black currant tea and leather books. Sure enough, when I took my first whiff, that's exactly what I detected and it was amazing. I let my family members smell it too and they were all fascinated. I let it burn for a little while and then I started getting a headache. I quickly blew it out and gave it a day before lighting again. When I smelled it the next day, it made me really sick and nauseous. Now I can't stand the scent. And my family noticed the same thing. It was wonderful the first time, but only the first time. Now I can't have it anywhere near me without getting sick. I was really excited for this, so it makes me sad. I don't think it's an altogether terrible product. It has a lovely design and the idea behind it is really cool. The scent is just really off.

I was pleasantly surprised by the scent of this candle. It's always hit or miss when buying something online, but this smells great! It's light and flowery. I got the pride & prejudice one for my roommates birthday, and it was perfect!

This unique set of candles burn clean (not a lot of black soot) and smell amazing. So far, I have the Alice in Wonderland Tea Party scent and will likely buy some others for my sister in law for Christmas!

                    Comments about UncommonGoods Literary Candles:

A lovely candle for any Jane Eyre fan. The scent, though heavy on the typical, run-of-the-mill rose essential oil smell, is surprisingly sweet and cheerful for such a long and dramatic tale, hinting at the hope and happiness at the story's end. Just imagine reading the book alongside the candle...could really help get you through those tragic parts! I personally prefer the scent of Pemberley and A Mad Tea Party, but overall this is a pretty pink candle with a pleasant scent. A lovely gift. #sweepstakes

I received my first Pemberley literary candle as a gift from a friend who knew I loved Jane Austen novels. But beyond its nostalgic value, I simply love the scent of this candle! Moreover, I can tell it is a quality candle by how quickly the scent diffuses into the room...a major plus when it comes to scented candles. Fun bonus is the pretty fuchsia color of the melted wax! It's no wonder I had to buy another when my first finally burned to the bottom.
