One-Of-A-Kind Comfort

Upcycled from vintage saris by artisans working under fair-trade practices in India, these lovely blankets feature patchwork arrangements of richly patterned cotton fabric bound by an ancient technique. To make each lightweight throw, individual saris are cut into strips and then hand stitched together with others to create a lovely, patterned pastiche. The sari swatches are then united with bright, ticked kantha stitching, a crafting technique passed down for generations. Handmade in Darjeeling, India, from 100% upcycled materials.

Due to the recycled and handmade nature of this item, each is unique and will vary.

It was such a neat surprise to discover what the blanket looked like only once I recieved it! Yes this was a gift from my family to me, but when I saw the uncommon goods tape I knew they got me what I asked for :).

My cats kept smelling it and although it didn't smell bad at all right out of the box I wanted it to smell like the fabric softener I use so I threw it in the washer. Then, as I hear the washer going I wonder if it is ok to even wash it! It came out perfectly fine from the normal cycle and a low heat drying cycle, but I'm curious if there is a certain way I'm supposed to wash it? I was going to use it as a throw on my bed to keep the cat hair off my sheets, but I don't think it should be washed as often as I normally wash my "cat throw" so I'm saving this beatiful blanket for lounging around on the couch.

Don't get me wrong, it looks very sturdy in its construction (with beautiful stitching completely covering it, something you don't really see in the photos) so I don't think it will just fall apart, but I worry with the dyes and the hand stitching that repetitive machine washing wouldn't be good for it.

But otherwise I love it! And once I find a reason to get myself a present I want to get a few more to keep around in a pretty stack for people to use for movie nights and to brighten up the room easily.

Received this as a gift from my in-laws. They were so excited to give it to us and we could not understand why until we looked at the pictures that were advertised. This is a great idea and I know that every one is different but the one we received was just 2 solid blocks of color on the front and the back was just a plane cream color that seemed more like a liner fabric than a nice blanket. I think that if you are going to sell blankets that are so simple than you should have pictures of those too.

This is a beautiful piece. Can use it for decoration or a nice blanket to sit while you watch the fireworks in the park. That's what I initially purchased it for, then used on a picnic as well.

          Service and delivery comments:

Delivery was promised on Friday. Did not arrive on time. Another box was also late as well. These boxes were needed for Christmas presents. I paid almost $40 dollars to assure delivery of both. The company refunded only $25. Because family members were in from Oklahoma and Ohio, I had to pay postage again to send boxes costing me another $30.

I believe uncommon goods should have refunded the entire postage for both boxes.

            Comments about UncommonGoods Kantha Blanket:

My son gave me a warm-color kantha blanket for Mother's Day. It's beautifully hand-worked, with colors that remind me of spices, mangoes, and garden foliage. There's some tie-dye work in the fabrics, and some bold printed strips. The blanket's borders are dark-colored kantha stitches, with the two length-wise borders in a straight-rows pattern , and the two width-wise borders in a repeating-scroll pattern. The blanket lining is in paler, softer colors. I love to see the corner or edge of the blanket turned back, to show the more delicately-colored lining. The work is playful, artistic, and witty. I love it. Also, what a plus that it's upcycled, and handmade!
