Treasured Wishes

Where do wishes go once you make them? Their force for good travels out into the universe in ways we don't understand, but what if you could keep a piece behind as a special reminder of that magic?

Glass artist Jill Henrietta Davis has conjured up a way to do just that. Each shimmering ball of hand-blown, blue glass comes with 52 tiny slips of paper for you to pause once a week throughout the year and record a message of hope or gratitude. Coil them up and tuck them in the tiny hole near the base and they become a permanent part of the display.

People often ask Jill why the wishes can"t come back out, and her explanation can be summed up with birthday candles. "When you blow out your candles, you don"t tell the wish you made, otherwise it won"t come true," says Jill. "But more importantly, memories are always more beautiful than photographs, and the same is true of wishes. When you look at the little slips of paper accumulating in your Wishing Ball, I want you to think about the Big Picture those messages convey. Rereading the notes would be like looking backwards, or trying to step in the same river twice." Handmade in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

“When you relinquish the tools you take for granted ... you have to stretch and find new tools to suit the new situation. Sometimes it’s scary, sometimes it’s awkward, often it’s funny, nearly always it’s a great investment.”

During her freshman year studying fashion at the Parsons School of Design, Jill Davis realized her clothes were more like wearable sculpture than fashion. Wanting to stay at Parsons, she began exploring different departments. The day she walked into the glass studio and saw molten glass for the first time, her search was over. “Glass is the most challenging and rewarding material I have ever encountered,” says Jill. “You can’t bully it—you are perpetually persuading and coaxing the glass into shape. Even the best living master glass blowers cannot always get the glass to do what they want! It’s this feisty streak that keeps me enchanted.”

First of all, I need to explain HOW MUCH my best friend loved this gift. We used it at her bridal shower - all of us wrote messages and wishes to the bride and groom, and we placed them in the ball followed by a kiss on the cheek for the bride. She cried with tears of happiness. All of those wishes, captured for eternity. I know that some people whispered to her the wish as they gave her their ceremonial kiss, and others just smiled with the knowledge that they were sending a secret wish.

Now, this leads me to my "second of all"... when I bought the wishing ball, I read the description completely. At no time did I think that the ball could ever be opened, and the sentiments read and placed back. Wishes are meant to go into the ether after they are made. This is a symbolic and thoughtful gift.

And this all concludes with my "third of all"... the website has a GREAT feature so that you can SEE THE ACTUAL SIZE of the object you want to buy. I read the dimensions, but I still wanted to SEE how big 3.5" looked for a round item. I used the uncommongood tool, I held my driver's license up to the screen to calibrate it to the size of my monitor... and I saw exactly what I was to purchase. When it arrived, I was not surprised - because I knew what I was getting when I ordered it.

I think these are GREAT and thoughtful gifts - perfect bridal shower Matron or Maid of Honor gift to the bride. I can think of many other occasions I would purchase one of these - really, any milestone event (birthday, anniversary, new job, etc...).

I wanted to give it to my daughter for a wedding shower gift . I wanted friends and family to write wishes for her marriage.
I didn't realize once you put the wishes in you cannot remove them.
This won't work.
I wanted my daughter to read them after they got married.
You have to break the ball to get them out and that seems to be a yucky thing to have to do.
I won't be giving it to her.(:

    Comments about UncommonGoods Wishing Ball:

A very unique gift! I bought two for Christmas gifts and they are so pretty for starters. A perfect gift for anyone with a little imagination. Write down your wishes, dreams, good thoughts etc... Roll them up and tuck them into the Wishing Ball for safe keeping forever! What a clever concept! I plan on purchasing 3 more for nieces and godchild (ages 11-25). I just think they're cool!

I slid a birthday check to my daughter through the opening in the Wishing Ball. So she not only received some valued funds, she also has a magical way to remind herself each and everyday of the blessings in her life.

TThe wishing ball base is the same as the ball

    By

    Comments about UncommonGoods Wishing Ball:

The catalog shows base as being silver and so disappointed to see it is not. The paper for writing is small for those who penmanship is large. But do love the idea of putting down what you're most grateful for during that week.

This gift is for my young friend with breast cancer. She had a double mastectomy...and later found out she also had a brain tumor...which also needed to be removed. When real life sets in...many wishes are made. I wish her a bright healthy new 2018 !

    Comments about UncommonGoods Wishing Ball:

I plan to do as the instructions state: There are 52 sheets of paper and I plan to sit down on the same day every week beginning in January and write down a wish or a thought of gratitude and then roll it up and place it in the ball. It will be my private "stash" of good thoughts & dreams.
