Prior to launching their company, Sarah and Nick struggled to sustain a kitchen garden in their fourth-floor Chicago apartment. Despite both honing their gardening skills as children, as busy adults they struggled to grow anything (container gardening is incredibly challenging). They turned to hydroponics for help and were astounded by the results, but unimpressed with the quality of products available. With that, the seed for their stylish, space-saving indoor gardens was planted.

Very disappointing
I have now purchased two of UG's grow kits, and I'm done. For this one, the initial watering instructions were unclear, and everything drowned. For the other, the mini-daisies, I got really excited because the seed sprout rate was phenomenal. Then they all gave up. And yes, I had thinned them. I really couldn't tell whether the medium was too dry or too wet. These failures have done little but remind me why I buy bedding plants and (occasionally) collect my own seeds.

Good for a couple days
At first I was excited that it was so easy to grow basil and it grew pretty quickly.It was perfectly healthy and I was able to use a couple leaves for one lunch. A couple days later, the plant completely wilted and a white fuzz was all over the the base of the plant. Nothing changed about the environment.

I purchased the Basil Mason Jar Garden last year as a Christmas gift mainly for the novelty of the gift. I was blown away at how incredible it turned out. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing, but the best smelling and tasting basil I've ever had. It's easy, fun and a convenient way to grow an herb on your kitchen windowsill. I ordered another Basil and added Parsley this time. Looking forward to another year of delicious fresh herbs at my fingertips.

What are the white "rock" looking material? Does algae build up on the glass?

Hi! The white "rock" looking material is a hydroponic system. We recommend watching the video near the photos to get a closer look. Anytime you have nutrient rich water there is going to be some algae growth. The jar can be easily rinsed and wiped out with warm water.

Can you use any seeds or do you have to buy seed pods or something through you? If the latter, are green onions available?

Each kit comes with seeds, and while we don't have green onions right now, the options we have are organic basil, organic cilantro, organic parsley, mint, or rosemary.

Can these jars be re-used again with new store bought seeds, when the ones that came with the jar are used up? Will the new seeds work like the original one?

The stainless steel net pot and recycled glass grow medium can both be reused—simply rinse with hot water. Add new seeds and use soil or coco pith to help seeds germinate. Use a water-soluble fertilizer and follow its instructions.

How is it self watering? I tend to over water. How do you not overwater without a drain hole (assuming that there is not one)?

A combination of an inert porous growing medium and a wick transports water and nutrients to the plant roots via capillary action. The nutrient solution is held in a reservoir and taken up as needed, providing the perfect balance of water to oxygen.

Can these be used/grown in hot temps? I have lots of sun, but the room is about 90 degrees most days and humid.

Yes, these can and during the outdoor growing season you can even place the jar outside. If temps outside drop below 55°F,remove jar from outside/window to prevent cold damage.

I received the basil and cilantro as a gift on valentine's day (February 14th). I move to a new house in April (so in 2 months) and wanted to wait to plant them then. Will they still grow normally? or should I plant then as soon as possible. Thank you

My cilantro has thin grey mold growing over the surface of the soil. How can I correct this problem and stop it from happening again?

Our guess is this is "powdery mildew", which is common to cilantro. A quick internet search will offer you some suggestions on how to best handle this, depending on your climate! We wish your little plant luck!
