Maker Stories

Giving Your Heart

April 26, 2011

When we saw Kiel Mead’s new His and Her Heart Necklaces, we knew we had to get the full story. Here’s a look at Kiel’s studio, and how he came up with the idea of giving your heart to another on the end of a pendant.

“Anything that needs to be made, I’ll try and make it.”

Kiel takes objects that exist in every day life and sees them in a different light. He thinks about wearing them in a different light.

“I wanted to make a love story. When I started out, my intention was to write something. To write something that could go in association with other jewelry I’ve created. But then I started to pay attention to other symbolic stuff that comes along with Valentine’s Day. Hearts were obviously the first choice. I thought it was funny for me to be making hearts because I’m not a big jewelry company … anything like that.

“But I started to fall in love with the idea, and when I started to do all these drawings I started to see these two individuals giving away a heart to him or her.”

We love the idea too!
