The Experience

Long before everyone quaffed cola, root beer was the bubbly refreshment of choice—and a soft drink that’s such an American original, the founding fathers were probably sipping it when they signed the Declaration of Independence. In this live virtual class, junior brewmasters take a sweet stroll back in time as they learn how to make frothy, creamy root beer the old-fashioned way.

  • Instructor and "fizz-ologist" Shannon Sadler will walk kids through what’s in their root beer kit (see "Comes with the class," below).
  • They’ll learn how to brew a root beer "tea" with all-natural botanicals and make a scrumptious caramel syrup that’ll be the foundation of this bubbly brew.
  • While everyone’s cooking up a storm, they’ll discover fun facts and history about the origins and history of America's oldest pop.
  • Shannon will share other fun ways to use root beer concentrate for all sorts of delicious treats, like popsicles, gummies, and hard candy.
  • At the end of the hour, the class will sample—and reward!—their hard work by making luscious old-timey root beer floats.
Class length: 60 minutes.
Recommended for: Ages 8–12 (accompanied by a parent or guardian; see below for more information).
Comes with the class: Our Make Your Own Artisan Root Beer Kit is packed with the zesty natural botanicals traditionally used for making root beer (like sarsaparilla, ginger root, and birch bark) and contains no artificial ingredients or high-fructose corn syrup.

To purchase this Uncommon Experience, you must be at least 18 years old and provide your email address when ordering. If you’re giving this Experience as a gift, your recipient must be the child’s parent or legal guardian (not the child themselves). A parent or legal guardian must be able to attend the live virtual class with their child, using their Zoom account (not an account belonging to the child or their school). Live Experiences for kids are not recorded, and none of the children’s personal information will be collected, used, or disclosed.

To give this Experience as a gift, simply purchase the class for the date/time you think will work for your recipient and their child. If that doesn’t work for them, no worries! Send an email that includes your order confirmation number to help@uncommongoods.com at least 48 hours prior and we’ll help get them moved into a scheduled class that works better for them. Please note: By default, order confirmations and event details are sent to the purchaser’s email. If you'd like this information to go to your gift recipient instead, select "this is a gift" under your chosen date. Once in your cart, you can enter the recipient's email address and choose a delivery date for the class confirmation email.

About

Both crafting and teaching come naturally to Shannon Sadler: She grew up in a crafts-loving home in small-town Ohio and was DIY-ing by hand as soon as she was old enough to hold a paintbrush. Some of Shannon's fondest memories involve time spent making things with family and friends, and as a middle-school teacher for seven years, Shannon also loved using creativity and experiments to spark her students' curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world around them.

In addition to the Make Your Own Artisan Root Beer Kit, you will need a 2-quart stock pot with lid, a small saucepan with lid, measuring spoons and cups, a spatula, a container with lid (woozy bottles or mason jars work great!), 1-2 frosty cold mugs, an ice cream scoop and an optional carbonation machine.
