Gardens Take Flight
There's nothing quite like a garden aflutter with wild butterflies in the afternoon sun. Attract your neighborhood beauties with this sand-and-water puddler, designed to hold on to natural minerals after water evaporates.
Its shallow well of recycled glass holds sand or rock salt along with a teaspoon of water. When the water evaporates (in under a day), butterflies are attracted to the minerals left behind from the hard water and sand/salt. Once butterflies know where they can find these minerals, they return regularly. Place it in a conspicuous nook to transform your outdoor space into an enchanted garden.
Designed by Jo-Anne and Gerald Warren. Handmade of stoneware and recycled glass in Canada.

I am not sure I understand this fully--but I LOVE the concept and the piece is beautiful!
Juanita
Vote: Thumbs up!
Nice idea, but I would want to know the size before considering whether I would buy it.
Suzanne
Vote: Thumbs down!
I also don't understand it and wonder whether it would breed mosquitoes as well as attracting butterflies?
KAREN
Vote: Thumbs down!
maybe it's the explanation, but it seems like an odd product. do you lay it down on the grass or in the garden, if so, how would a butterfly see it between foliage? Why would this attract anything?
Sherri-Lynn

size?
Michelle
Vote: Thumbs up!
I'm giving this a provisional thumbs up because it's lovely, but what size is it?
Mallory
Vote: Thumbs up!
I like the idea of it as well, and it is very pretty. I agree that if chosen, the description would need to be better and include size and placement suggestions. I'm not sure if the price is good; it might need to be lowered.

Looks great, sounds great...but not solid info. How big? Lay on ground?
Jen

I HATE butterflies so I don't care if they're nourished.

Never heard of this before, and couldn't pay $40 for something that might not work. If I don't have the right kind of plants in my yard, I don't know if butterflies would hightail it over here just for a drink of my mineral water.

Pretty but puddles = mosquitoes

I love wildlife and try to attract it but I have been able to do so for much less. How big is it, not that would matter. Just plant a butterfly garden, more attractive and less mosquitoes.

Vote: Thumbs up!
Need a lot of product shots to sell this. How is it used? Does it attract other bugs? Is it only after rain? Do you water it with special minerals?
sly
Vote: Thumbs down!
Can't picture it and standing water sounds more like a hazard
Janet
Vote: Thumbs up!
Like the idea, especially if you can truthfully say that it will attract natural enemies to aphids or other pests. But I agree with the other postings that information needs to be better
Kathy
Vote: Thumbs up!
I do like it but would like to more about it as others have mentioned before me
Andrea
Vote: Thumbs down!
Standing water leads to mosquitoes. I do like the design but don't really understand the concept of why butterfly's will be drawn to it.
Melissa

I would agree with Mallory's previous comments. Love butterflies and this is an interesting concept.
Daniel
Vote: Thumbs down!
Sorry, but I'm not sold on this idea. I can be a sucker for bird feeders and plants that attract butterflies. However this looks like a small piece of crockery that would get lost in the garden and probably be full of slugs or a breeding place for mosquitoes.
Irene
This is very pretty and unique as well. I, too, wonder of it's size. Does it have any depth to it to catch water? Could it be put on a pedestal and used as a birdbath of sorts? I think there should be a better explanation of what it is and how it can be used. But from the info at hand, I would give it a thumbs up!
Linda
Vote: Thumbs up!

Vote: Thumbs down!
Forty bucks to feed butterflies? Good Lord. It's pretty as an ornament but overpriced, and there's no concept of size from the photo
Laurie
Vote: Thumbs up!
I am so gonna buy this if you offer it.
Debbie
Vote: Thumbs down!
How big is it? without dimensions, it is hard to vote for something that could breed "skeeters".
Rachelle

This a a great garden or windowsill piece. But, Every product needs to have it's size illustrated or explained in order for the potential customer to be able to know just where they would place it in their own space.
Lynn
Vote: Thumbs up!
I've seen these before and it would definitely help if the size were shown - the ones I've seen are hardly the size that would breed quantities of mosquitoes.
Sara
Vote: Thumbs down!
As others said: I don't get how it works, how big it is or if it would work.
Wendy
Vote: Thumbs down!
Sorry, all I can see in this is a mosquito breeding puddle. I do like the fern-embossed stoneware; would be a nice design for stepping stones.

Butterflies are great, but where would you put this so that they would find the natural minerals left behind? The shape reminds me of a Ouija board pointer.

I second Vawn's comment, not sure I understand the product fully but love the design and concept. Would love to see photos of it in a setting.
Heather
Vote: Thumbs down!
I worry about it being a place for mosquitoes to breed as well. I would also never use it personally, but I do know people that I would buy something like this for. If it weren't for the "skeeter" issue.
Jill

Very different.

What a cute idea. If it works, I'd love to have butterflies in my backyard!

They sell this cheaper on Amazon. And for those who don't understand why this would be useful, butterflies "puddle" (drink out of mud puddles after it rains) to get minerals and nutrients from the soil that they don't get from flowers.
SUZETTE
Vote: Thumbs up!
I want to love it... but I have too many questions on the product itself and whether it actually would attract butterflies.

I am with Amaranth Stoneware, and I wanted to give a bit more info for the product. The puddler is about 8 1/2" per side, about 1 1/4 thick. The well of recycled glass in only about 1/2" deep, so no water builds up in it. The purpose of the well is to put sand or rock salt in the well along with a teaspoon of water. When the water evaporates (in under a day) the butterflies are attracted to the minerals left behind from the hard water and sand/salt. They need this mineral, and once they know where it is, they come back regularly. The product is also available in red stoneware. I hope this answers some questions.
Julia
Hey, this is Julia from UncommonGoods. Just want to answer some of the great questions that are coming in. The water dish is only about 3 in wide, and the water evaporates quickly, leaving behind natural minerals that attract butterflies. The risk of mosquitoes is very slim! Thanks for all the comments so far!
Julie
Vote: Thumbs up!
Neat idea, decent price, love the use of recycled glass- would definitely want to know how large it is though

Cool concept but the minerals will just buildup and ruin the beautiful glass. I would buy this if there was more of the glass on the leaves.
Shannon
It's interesting and pretty. It seems a little small, but I like that water doesn't stand long in it. Butterflies - yes; mosquitoes - no.

Wow, had never heard of this. I live in an area where Monarchs migrate from Mexico. This would probably be quite successful here- we excel at evaporating water, too.

I think that this is BEAUTIFUL, but it needs to be sitting atop a garden stake, like a mini bird feeder/bird bath). Also, I'd want to be sure that it worked. If the price were a little lower, and it came atop a garden stake, and it was guaranteed to work in attracting butterflies (
