A Spin on Science

Reading an article on the wood's ability to bend provided Jenny Wong-Stanley the seed of inspiration to create a budding business. To make this coiled planter, the artist carefully bands a slat of conifer wood by hand into an intricate spiral reminiscent of strings of DNA. The knotty piece is then pyrographed with German philosopher Immanuel Kant's witty quote on the nature of science, "Science is organized knowledge. Wisdom is organized life." Emphasising the individuality of its atom-like construction and the spiny air plant it surrounds (included), this planter makes a strong statement in any setting and is the perfect gift for science buffs. Handmade in Brooklyn, New York.

Due to the handmade nature of this item, each is unique and will vary.

One day after reading an article on the bending radius of oak and finding an old wooden ruler in my storage, I became obsessed with trying to bend wood (happened eventually) and that led to a budding small business. I fell in love with the wood bending process and progressed, creating Art of Plants where I incorporate my bended sculptures and topiaries with plants. The process starts with milling the wood to workable pieces before it enters the steaming process. The steaming process has approximately two to four steps that allows the wood to become heated and saturated to different levels. Once the wood is bent, it is left to set and dry prior to the finishing stage.

The planter is extremely hard to balance and doesn't look as nicely shaped as the one in the photo. There is also an awkward spot where the ends of the wood are glued together which isn't hidden or covered up making it too prominent.
