Say It With Spirits

Handcrafted from Tennessee Sour Mash or Kentucky Bourbon barrel staves and finished with antiqued gold accents, this handsome ballpoint pen pays homage to the iconic libation's origins. A spirited gift for groomsmen, new graduates, or your favorite whiskey-lover, this stylish stylus brings new meaning to Hemingway’s advice to "write drunk, edit sober." Handcrafted by Jason Smith in Indiana.

Made in Indiana

About how he got started in pen making, Jason Smith recalls, "Several years ago, after being laid-off from my job in the construction industry, my uncle brought me into his small Tennessee workshop and said "I'm gonna teach you how to make a pen." I had no idea that weekend visit to the family mountain was going to evolve into the amazing life I have today. Over the years, I've really grown as an artist, restlessly challenged myself to do better and be better - never losing sight of my commitment to provide the best service and the highest quality writing instruments and gifts possible.

Looks Great, But Bad Quality

About Me Quality Oriented

Verified Buyer

I have never reviewed a product online before and was not planning on reviewing this one. However, I just received yet another email from Uncommon Goods asking me to tell them my thoughts about this product and I decided to oblige them.

I received this product as a Christmas gift and was very excited about it. The pen looked fantastic and wrote well. However after using it for a couple of weeks the stylus tip on the back of the pen fell off. I attempted to super glue it back on myself but it wouldn't stay. I contacted customer service and began the process of replacing the pen. I was sent a free shipping label but had to buy a padded envelope at the UPS store to send the product back. This only cost a couple of dollars but I was a little annoyed at having to pay out of pocket at all after I had been sent a faulty product.

About a week later I received a replacement pen. The packaging did not look as if it had been damaged in transit but when I examined the pen there was a large crack in the wood. The crack was large enough that I could see the metal underneath the wood. It was also cracked along the grain of the wood and looked as if the crack would only continue to grow with more use. So I had to contact customer service again, get a new shipping label, drive to the UPS store, purchase another envelope to return the product, and wait for another pen to be delivered. On the plus side, when I mentioned the out of pocket expense to the customer service agent, she offered me a $10 gift certificate. I thought that was a nice gesture.

When I received the third pen, I was worried that the stylus tip would fall of again. I decided to keep it solely in the breast pocket of my jacket. I thought that might protect the pen a little more and keep the tip from falling off. The pen arrived on a Tuesday evening, and before noon on Wednesday, the tip had fallen off again. At this point I have completely given up on the product. I told Customer Service to refund the account of the person who got me the pen. However, I still had to drive to a UPS store for the third time and purchase an envelope to send it back.

Bottom Line: It has been a couple of months since I received this pen as a gift. In that time, I have made three calls to customer service, made three trips to the UPS Store, bought three envelopes to mail the pen back, made one awkward phone call to the person who gave me the pen in the first place explaining why they should expect to see the money returned to their account, and am still currently writing with a Bic.

I hope anyone else who has purchased this product has had a better experience with it than I have. But I would definitely not recommend buying this pen.
