Margaret Dorfman

Margaret's work is made by hand from over 40 different varieties of fresh fruits and vegetables that are cured, dried, pressed and aged in a 10-14 day process. The translucent parchments that result capture and preserve the jewel-like colors and intricate structures that are characteristic of each fruit or vegetable. She calls this Vegetable Parchment, because the texture and translucency calls to mind the vellum parchments of medieval Europe.

Margaret realized at an early age that the best materials like acorns, bark, moss and feathers weren't found in stores. She still believes that the best materials are found in unexpected places, such as Chinatown for lotus root and bok choy, small Mexican mercados for chili peppers and papaya, Japanese markets and Korean groceries for green necked daikon. Though she now uses a produce supplier, she still visits these places with an eye out for the novel.

Everything is cut by hand with an old-fashioned mandolin slicer and a wickedly sharp assortment of knives. Her studio follows sustainable practices, using reclaimed water and recyclable packaging, and no toxic products are used. Leftovers are composted, recycled or donated to the local zoo.

Margaret earned degrees in Linguistics and Anthropology from U.C. Davis. She then went on to gain fluency in American Sign Language, and worked for many years as a sign language interpreter. For the last 13 years she has done this work full-time at her studio in Northern California, where she lives with her husband and son.

"It is deeply satisfying to work with these fruit and vegetables," says Margaret. "There seems to be alchemy involved as they transform from the familiar and commonplace and become objects of unexpected beauty. But I know it is not magic--and I am not really creating something new. I am only uncovering what was always there to see."

Comments about WATERMELON RADISH PARCHMENT CUFF:

        Was charged for the gift.
        It never arrived.
I had to call to get it shipped.
        It arrived after Christmas.
I feel like, even though I was charged, Uncommon Goods would have never sent the item or returned my money if I hadn't called them.

        Shady.

Comments about WATERMELON RADISH PARCHMENT CUFF:

I saw some negative comments on this product, but thought I would try it anyway. I should have heeded the warning. The cuff has a strange shape that is not flexible, it has absolutely washed out colors (nothing resembling watermelon or radish that I can see). It's unusable to me. I'm really sorry I invested the time and money.

Comments about WATERMELON RADISH PARCHMENT CUFF:

This bracelet was a birthday gift from my boyfriend. He originally ordered the purple cabbage bracelet but was much darker than in the picture. We returned it and got the watermelon. I was slightly concerned based on some comments here, but I love the bracelet. Was not sticky, and yes it has a rough look and feel to it, but that is one of the redeeming qualities of the homemade piece. Great quality.

Only con is that bracelet is larger than average/small wrist size. It moves around a lot, but can be adjusted slightly.

Comments about WATERMELON RADISH PARCHMENT CUFF:

I noticed the stickiness at first. I took it out of the box for about a day and it was fine. I was hoping it was a little more polished but after a little while I really like the rawness of it. It goes along with the naturalness of the fruits. I actually gave it to my mom for mother's day and she always gets a lot of compliments when she wears it!

Comments about WATERMELON RADISH PARCHMENT CUFF:

I thought this was beautiful on the website, but it doesn't have the prettiness that the top of the bracelet in the picture shows, the whole thing is rough like the inside of the bracelet looks in the picture. It also is angled sharply instead of curving nicely around wrist. It looks weird on because of this. Additionally, it could use some instruction on care b/c it isn't hard or soft and looks like it might respond really badly to water. Way too expensive for all of the problems. I would return it, but it was a gift.

Comments about WATERMELON RADISH PARCHMENT CUFF:

I was so surprised at the previous posts. I wish that was my experience! I was so excited when I discovered this unique piece. I wanted so badly to gift this cuff to a friend. But the quality was not at all what the picture showed. And it was almost as if it wasn't quite dry. The whole cuff was sticky.
            No one else experienced this?
Alas... dare I give it another shot?

Comments about WATERMELON RADISH PARCHMENT CUFF:

It looks great in the photo, so i ordered this as a gift for my sister, and expected it to be made from the raddish and watermelon. Instead it appears that it is a metal cuff with some dried fruit over the top and a clear coat. I was embarrassed when i saw it. I wish that i would have known that it was going to look so cheap. I would have been better off to have my 6 year old make something similar. On the other hand the colors are beautiful, so if the artist can figure out how to make it as it is advertised it would be a remarkable piece of jewelrey.
