On The Cuff

Margaret Dorfman captures natural beauty in these gorgeous, shimmering cuffs. Inspired by blossoms and fruit slices floating in a pond, Dorfman creates these vibrant pieces using fresh fruits like papaya, starfruit, and more that are then cured, pressed, aged, and dried into a thin sheet. The sheet is then fused to a copper cuff that shines through the parchment, producing a lovely glow. An included card details each variety seen on your unique cuff. Handmade in California.

See how Margaret is striving to be sustainable in the face of drought in California on the blog.

Due to the handmade nature of this item, each is unique and will vary.

Margaret's work is made by hand from over 40 different varieties of fresh fruits and vegetables that are cured, dried, pressed and aged in a 10-14 day process. The translucent parchments that result capture and preserve the jewel-like colors and intricate structures that are characteristic of each fruit or vegetable. She calls this Vegetable Parchment, because the texture and translucency calls to mind the vellum parchments of medieval Europe.

Margaret realized at an early age that the best materials like acorns, bark, moss and feathers weren't found in stores. She still believes that the best materials are found in unexpected places, such as Chinatown for lotus root and bok choy, small Mexican mercados for chili peppers and papaya, Japanese markets and Korean groceries for green necked daikon. Though she now uses a produce supplier, she still visits these places with an eye out for the novel.

Everything is cut by hand with an old-fashioned mandolin slicer and a wickedly sharp assortment of knives. Her studio follows sustainable practices, using reclaimed water and recyclable packaging, and no toxic products are used. Leftovers are composted, recycled or donated to the local zoo.

Margaret earned degrees in Linguistics and Anthropology from U.C. Davis. She then went on to gain fluency in American Sign Language, and worked for many years as a sign language interpreter. For the last 13 years she has done this work full-time at her studio in Northern California, where she lives with her husband and son.

"It is deeply satisfying to work with these fruit and vegetables," says Margaret. "There seems to be alchemy involved as they transform from the familiar and commonplace and become objects of unexpected beauty. But I know it is not magic--and I am not really creating something new. I am only uncovering what was always there to see."

Yes I would buy this again but would only order one.

Was a gift. Beautiful but ordered 2 for my sister's birthday thinking they would be 2 different ones based on the photo. Instead 2 alike arrived. Since it is fragile I guess she can keep the second in case the first one breaks. She does like it a lot!

Fantastic gift!

Thank you Wish there were more to choose from

Very lovely

Everything about the item is lovely and you can tell that delicate hands and a keen eye for beauty crafted it. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars was because the item is not as colourful and the colours are not as vibrant as they are in the photo but I realize it is the nature of handcrafted items to appear differently with each creation. Don't let that stop you from purchasing this item because it is stil undeniably beautiful and unique and it is sure to please anyone who receives it. 4.5 stars out of 5 is what I would like to give.

Cute, unique gift

Looking for a unique gift for girlfriends. These totally fit the bill.

Beautiful with slightly odd fit

Overall, I would still recommend this as a gift. The bends that create the cuff shape are sharp angles that require I bend it more in the middle to give it a more rounded shape that looks better on the wrist. I worry that bending it myself will damage the applique of the fruit. Still, overall, I will give it as a gift and think the recipient will wear it and think it's beautiful.

star fruit cuff

I love how different this cuff is. Able to wear with just about anything. However, because it is very rough, it is VERY uncomfortable when it slides, it rubs on the skin so I need to wear a tighter long sleeve and wear the cuff over it. p.s. i have tiny wrists
