Dinner Brake

This upcycled tray delivers some delicious design to your green lifestyle. It’s handmade by designer Gilbert VandenHeuvel, an avid cyclist who loves incorporating reclaimed bicycle parts into his furniture and decorative art pieces. Here he uses a round frame that he fills with bicycle gears. The varied sizes and shapes of the gears almost suggest snowflakes, and because VandenHeuvel is using reclaimed materials, no two trays will be alike. Covering the gears is a sturdy circle of tempered glass, and completing the tray are handles made from bicycle brake grips. The tray deftly rides the line between formal functionality and casual design, and lets you celebrate your love of cycling as you serve appetizers at a dinner party or drinks out on the patio. Handmade in Canada.

Made in Canada

My inspiration comes from the bicycle itself. They are almost begging to be reborn, reshaped into something surprising and beautiful. A bicycle lends itself well to re-purposing: the sexy sprockets, curvy rims, flexible rubber, and sturdy frame make for endless design possibilities. With no formal art or design education, all my pieces are raw imagination with practical structural design all mixed together with my love of bicycles. In the beginning, I started out using only the metal parts of the bike, but I never threw away the other parts since I knew I would use them somehow, someday. Now I'm expanding my design range by weaving, sewing and arranging the tires and inner tubes.

This tray was purchased for our Bosses, a couple that are avid cyclists who upcycle many items as well.

They were amazed and "Wowed" with excitement when they saw the tray.

It is the perfect gift for someone who has everything.

Well made serving tray. I gave this as a gift to my brother who is an avid bicyclist. He loves this tray and agrees that it's well made and very unique in design. It works well as a serving tray because of its great shape and not bulky or too heavy...

Comments about UncommonGoods Upcycled Bike Part Serving Tray:

This tray was a Christmas gift for my cycling crazy husband.
The first one I ordered arrived with the glass broken so I called Customer Service who organised sending me a replacement overnight so it would be here in time. They were amazing as it got here just in time to give. I can't say enough about how great the Customer Rep was to sort this for me and I hadn't even returned the broken one at that point!
Needless to say the tray was a hit. It's one of a kind and prefect for when my husband wants his meal in front of the TV!
