Heartwood

Handcrafted from lithe strips of wood, this romantic bouquet never loses its beauty. Nathaniel Nienow's carved sculptures start with photographs of wildflowers that he snaps and studies extensively before bringing his vision to life. He uses local walnut and ash woods to mimic his floral muse, shaping thin shavings into lithe petals and leaves. For a romantic finishing touch, he plants his piece in a heart-shaped frame, making his whimsical wall hanging the ideal Valentine's Day or fifth anniversary (wood) gift. Handmade in Bagley, Minnesota.

Nathaniel Niewnow has been creating fine handcrafted products with his family since 1987. His flower designs begin with extensive photographic research. He chooses a flower to model based on color, shape, and simple elegance. Once he's decided on a flower, art meets engineering. Making wood flow into smooth, delicate curves to mimic flowers in nature can be a difficult task.

Recreating wildflowers in wood is a process of selective simplification. He tries to key in on the most distinct characteristics of a flower (often developing new production techniques as he goes) and builds up levels of detail until he is satisfied with an elegant and accurate representation of nature.

As an avid outdoorsman, Nathaniel says it "has been a blessing for my work to bring me in such constant contact with nature. Not many people can take a walk in the woods and call it research and for that, I am truly grateful."

Comments about UncommonGoods Symbol of Love Heart Vase:

This piece of art was pleasantly larger than I thought it would be and looks just perfect on her wall. I wanted something different that would always remind her of us and be "different/one of a kind". It's perfect!
