Nature shows and Internet videos have made it impossible not to melt at the sight of sea otters. Mothers and pups float while holding "hands," they have velvety, thick fur (the densest of any mammal), and their rounded faces, with those little button eyes... melt, melt melt. Even though we can't keep them as pets, it's a snap for even a beginner to craft a couple of fuzzy, felted sea otter friends with Laurie Sharp's easy felting kit. Roll a fluff of wool into a tight barrel shape, poke lightly with a felting needle, and like magic, the wool fibers tangle together into a smiling, brown, three-inch sea otter holding a big, orange starfish. It's a satisfying first lesson in needle felting, and the end result can be proudly displayed as an ornament or saved as a treasured keepsake. The kit includes wool, felting needles, beads for eyes, ribbon, and detailed photo instructions. All you need is a sewing needle and thread, a ruler, and a foam pad or sponge to use as a work surface. Made in Suquamish, Washington.
