Inspiration in a Nutshell

With a nod to the form and colors of pistachios in the shell, this two-tiered server is perfectly designed to solve the nut's perennial problem: the leftover debris that piles up in your hand, in your pocket, or in the aftermath of a party. Featuring an organically coordinated, pistachio-green rim, the upper tier holds 8 ounces of whole nuts, while the lower, broader level offers an elegant solution to stash the shells without fumbling for a makeshift discard dish. It's routed from solid, sustainable North American Maple, hand sanded and finished with teak oil for a smooth, food-safe finish. The tiers come apart for easy, tidy shell disposal. Made in Dorset, Vermont.

Exclusively for UncommonGoods

The UncommonGoods Product Development team identified a problem inherent to serving pistachios—the mess produced by the discarded shells—and sought a design solution that was easy to present, serve, and clean. With guidance from our team, J.K. Adams developed and produced the Pistacho Pedestal. The design enables you to serve pistachios in the shell in a convenient and attractive way that incorporates space to dispose of the shells.

The J.K. Adams Company was founded in Dorset, VT in 1944, by Josiah Adams. In 1949, the Cooper family purchased the company and has owned it ever since. In the early years, the company produced wooden drafting equipment, slide rules, and surveying equipment. The company also did contract wood manufacturing and produced products such as wooden shoe shine boxes. As technology started to replace many of these products, the company started to design and manufacture cutting boards and other housewares. Some of the houseware innovations attributed to J.K. Adams are angled knife blocks, in-drawer knife racks and numerous innovative cutting board designs. The company now employs 48 people, many of whom have been with the company for over twenty years. The company has been from it founding and remains committed to operating in an environmentally and socially responsible manner.

Each item in the Uncommon Collection meets five important standards. Here's how Pistachio Pedestal qualified for the Collection:

Original Design

The Pistachio Pedestal design elegantly responds to the downside of whole pistachios—the leftover shells. The upper tier of the connecting, two-piece design holds whole nuts in an attractive server rimmed in pistachio green, while the lower tier stows discarded shells in a convenient, unobtrusive space until easy disposal.

Responsible Business Practices

mission statement

"Our mission is to put a J.K. Adams product in the hands of every person who is passionate about their kitchen, about the food they make, and about the connections made while entertaining with good food and good friends. We will design and produce products that are exceptional from a functional, aesthetic, and quality standpoint and will always stand by them with a full 100% replacement guarantee. We will continually work to prove that well run companies with committed and customer focused employees can grow and prosper by producing high quality products in an environmentally and socially responsible manner in the United States."

fair wage

J.K. Adams pays employees a starting wage of $12/hr., which exceeds Bennington County's living wage.

- Local (Vermont State) minimum wage: $10
- Federal minimum wage: $7.25
- Living wage of Bennington County: $10.18

paid time off

All full time employees receive 9 paid holidays and earn PTO based on years of service, from 1 to 4 weeks. They also receive 3 paid personal days off per year, available on January 1st and to be used within the calendar year.

recycling primary/secondary materials

J.K. Adams recycles all of its primary material (wood). All of their scrap and by-product pieces of wood are collected and burned in one of two wood-burning furnaces, which in turn reduces their dependence on fossil fuels. The sawdust they generate is collected in two 20-foot containers and sold to local dairy farms.

charitable giving

J.K. Adams has a long history of supporting local charities. These non-profit organizations include their local library, an organization focused on their local forests, a local theater, and organizations focused on numerous health and educational issues. In 2014, they provided these organizations with financial and product donations for events and auctions totaling $10,000.

The company supports local farmers and producers. During the summer months, a local farm operates a produce stand two days a week from in front of their building, and in the winter, they host the Sunday Dorset Farmers Market in their manufacturing facility

Teak oil, North American native wood (natural source materials), and milk paint.

This is a quality product that could be put out in any room of a house. It is very sturdy and attractive.

The best thing I like is its utility. When I used to eat pistachios I had two bowls..one for the nuts, and one for shells. This was awkward. Now I just pour my nuts in the top bowl and toss the shells below.

When I finish, I merely dump out the shells and wipe the bowl with a clean damp cloth. What could be easier.

I am disappointed with the quality of this item. As another reviewer pointed out, there are significant rough edges where the wood was not completely sanded, are rough and have notches. Further, ours arrived with wood dust as though it had not been properly finished. My husband sanded the internal corners and we finished it with Boos wood cream. It's presentable, but still has rough spots. This is a quality issue, not an element of uniqueness.

I purchased this for my husband for Christmas. He's very hard to buy for and loves pistachios, so I thought this would be good. So I haven't given it to him yet, but I looked at it when it arrived and it looks great and is well-made.
