Take Flight

Sarah Grange's embroidered art takes flight on wings of childlike creativity. Her depiction of a paper airplane and its swirling flight path looks like a simple line drawing, and yet it's made from hundreds of tiny stitches across her cotton canvas, each visible and providing tangible texture to the piece. Nestled in its wooden embroidery frame, this piece really lands as a decorative accent for either experienced travelers or young explorers-to-be. Handmade in Poughkeepsie, New York.

Sarah began her exploration and experimentation with embroidery in 2010, utilizing the craft in her conceptual sculpture work. With a natural inclination towards textiles Sarah found herself drawn to the process of embroidery as well as it’s history and the various associations and ideas that are embedded in the longstanding craft. During her years at art school, Sarah created various large scale conceptual embroidery works, using the practice as a means to subvert and criticize themes of femininity and the female experience. After finishing up her Sculpture degree in the spring of 2013, Sarah began her small business Kitsch & Stitch. Her business allows her to continue to explore her passion for embroidery, outside of her conceptual art work, and to create smaller more accessible hoop art. Inspired by the imagery and thoughts that pervade our day to day, Sarah creates bold whimsical hoop art to share with folks around the globe.
