Postscript Passion

Repetition makes the heart grow fonder...Okay, maybe that's not how the saying goes, but when it comes to saying "I love you", there's nothing like a good postscript (or two, or three). Matt Butler's love letters are cut by hand from a linoleum block using tools that he inherited from his grandfather, then printed in a hand-cranked press to produce a tactile impression in the cotton rag paper. Each print is numbered and signed by the artist. Handmade in Berkeley, California.

Matt Butler has been creating kick-ass prints since 2009. He grew up in the rolling hills of North Carolina, spending most of his time playing sports and running around the woods. Eventually, he stopped playing in the woods (at least most of the time) to attend NC State University for elementary education.

In his first year of teaching, he took a printmaking class at a community arts center in Raleigh. Fast forward three years: after many after-school hours spent pulling prints, and grading a few too many 5th grade assignments, Matt decided to pursue printmaking full time.

The subjects of his paper prints are influenced by his sense of humor and love of bikes, typography, and Southern culture. His best ideas come to him in lightbulb moments during conversations with friends. And Matt still loves kids and gives them high-fives as often as possible.
