Relive memories of windswept beaches, waves lapping the shoreline, and a life spent anchored to the sea with Grace Gunning's evocative container. In her ocean-inspired treasure box, the antiquated romance of aged copper meets a maritime motif. Grace found the inspiration for her keepsake box in the harrowing tale of Moby Dick and the location of her studio, along the mighty Hudson River in upstate New York.
She utilizes hand-run 18th and 19th century machines to shape the heavy gauge copper into a precious box. In the lid, she frames a low-relief diorama under glass of breaching whales and the proud prow of a tall ship. When tilted, hundreds of metal beads roll across the imagery, offering a changing view and a calming whir as the metallic waves ebb and flow in and out of sight. A ruminative reliquary for an old seadog or boating enthusiast, the velvet-lined box can keep a special pair of cufflinks, irreplaceable photos, and other important belongings safe when you're docked at home. Handmade in New York.
