Made in Pennsylvania

Exclusively for UncommonGoods

Jeff Davis has been making things since he was three and it's all he has ever wanted to do. Silk screen printing, wood turning, glass-blowing, welding, drawing, sculpting, carpentry, block printing, sewing - if there're materials and tools involved he is interested. Jeff has a BFA in theatrical set design from NYU and an MID (master of industrial design) from RISD. He has been running Vinylux for 13 years, which is the full extent of his business background, other than selling silk-screened t-shirts in high school. Jeff is inspired by a variety of influences, from the design work of the mid-century design masters such as Charles and Ray Eames and Jean Prouvé to the industrial "non-design" of high-voltage electrical pylons. He is drawn to simple and elegant solutions, minimal embellishment and objects that have a soul and a story. In his own work, Jeff looks to re-imagine familiar objects into new and creative designs.

Each item in the Uncommon Collection meets five important standards. Here's how Out the Door - Wall-Mounted Key Holder qualified for the Collection:

Original Design

Inspired by the familiar form of a key in a lock, this design transforms keys into key hangers and solves the need for that frantic, everyday search. Two contrasting woods (walnut and oak) that mimic the forms of the locks enhance this clever integration of form and function. The top slot for mail or reminders adds further functionality to the design.

Responsible Business Practices

mission statement

Vinylux is dedicated to reusing unwanted vintage vinyl records. All products are designed to maximize vinyl usage, minimize packaging and waste, and to provide high-quality, domestically manufactured goods. They strive to minimize energy usage by keeping our production local to Philadelphia, working in an energy efficient, naturally lit workspace and recycling all scrap materials. Vinylux provides jobs to recent college graduates, who have studied art, design, engineering, or other applicable majors.

fair wage

Vinylux pays employees a starting wage of $12/hr., which exceeds Philadelphia County's living wage.

- Local (Pennsylvania State) minimum wage: $7.25
- Federal minimum wage: $7.25
- Living wage of Pennsylvania County: $11.43

paid time off

Salaried employees are provided up to three weeks paid time off per year. Two of those weeks are for personal / sick days, and one of those weeks is a paid week off over Christmas. The current staff is entirely comprised of recent hires - all have been with the company for less than one year. These employees are provided a paid week off over Christmas and a flexible work schedule. In the event that some of these employees continue to work for more than one year, their contracts will be renegotiated and paid time off may be offered to them.

recycling primary/secondary materials

Vinylux is committed to the repurposing and re-imagining uses for obsolete vinyl records. The company currently repurposes and recycle over 200,000 records annually - equaling about 50,000 lbs. of records and album covers. Concurrent with Vinylux's commitment to reusing records is their dedication to generating as little waste as possible in our workshop and to recycling all scrap materials not used in production. All of their vinyl scrap is sent to record pressing plants to be reprocessed into new LPs.

Vinylux provides cash donations and in-kind product donations to the following non-profit organizations:

Waldorf School of Philadelphia - $350 year (cash and product donation)
