Down To Earth

Clean and restrained in form, expressive and rustic in execution, Melissa Schooley's verdant porcelain dishware grounds the modern table in minimalist design. Subtly evoking elements of the earth, glazed shades of sand and moss come together in this sophisticated setting for everyday use and graceful entertaining. The sunny shade of the shoreline gives way to an earth-toned interior ringed with a delicate spiral that hints at the hand-thrown nature of each piece. The artist's hand can be felt in every pinch of clay, brush of glaze, and wisps of sculpted vine, allowing this understated collection to provide a sturdy foundation for the well-dressed table. Handcrafted out of porcelain in Canada.

Made in Canada

Melissa Schooley grew up on an apple orchard in Southern Ontario. After a few false starts in university trying her hand at science and then social science, Melissa headed to Vancouver, BC to pursue a visual arts degree at Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Upon completion of her degree in 2002, Melissa moved back to Ontario and set up her studio in a barn on her parents farm. She has been potting full time since 2006 and sells her work in shops and galleries across Canada, the United States and abroad.

As a ceramic artist working with porcelain, she has a very strong interest in function. She strives to make pieces that are not only intended for use, but perform their functions well. "I enjoy playing with color, specifically how colors work with each other and how they play with the emotions of the user. I am interested not only in the visual appeal of functional objects, but also how they interact with their users: the feel of the glaze against skin, the size of the bowl in a hand, the ease with which a teapot pours, the feel of a cup's rim against the lip" - these are all considerations taken into account when she is creating a piece.

After 18 years, I am replacing my everyday dishes. My husband found this beautiful and unique design at UncommonGoods. Each piece was individually wrapped and arrived from Canada in perfect condition. We ordered 8 sets of this collection and are using them as our everyday dishes. Each piece is handcrafted by Melissa Schooley who is a very talented artist. She ensured each piece was perfect! We priced other dinnerware sets and this handmade dishware was no more expensive AND it is made to order. I am so pleased with the quality of the dinnerware and would highly recommend purchasing pottery made by Melissa. I look forward to adding more pieces to my set.
