Long Distance Love

Light up a loved one's life—across town or across the country—with two or more of these in-sync lamps. When you turn one on with a simple touch of your hand, its mate emits the same ambient glow, no matter where it is and who is on the other end: Parent or grandparent, niece or nephew, or long-distance significant other. Each person sets up their lamp via Wi-Fi, then reaches out and touches the lamp whenever they want to let their loved one know they're thinking of them. No need to choose a color: with every touch, the lamp cycles through a rainbow of them, one at a time. Designed by John Harrison and Vanessa Whalen. Assembled in Kansas.

Sold individually or in pairs (make your choice in the pull-down quantity menu).

“I see magic everywhere I look, but making something—then I get to touch the magic.”

When John Harrison and Vanessa Whalen first met, John was Associate Professor of Violin at Wichita State University and Vanessa was a pianist accompanying his students. Instantly friends, they did not start dating until many years later. By then, John had developed a second career as an electrical and computer engineer and Vanessa was a psychotherapist in private practice. John proposed to Vanessa on Christmas morning 2014 and their first touch lamps were also gifted that year. The two built them in their basement to connect John's family members spread out across the US and Canada. John now works with nonprofits to assemble the lamps while contributing back to the community. By marrying Vanessa, John also gained two sons, Brendan and Sean. The family now enjoys a blended household of dogs, as well as a small school of goldfish. John and Vanessa also founded a startup which develops mobile apps for kids to help them learn about and manage their feelings.

We have our lamp in our living room and are always delighted to see it start to glow. We originally bought two and gave one to my dad who had just been diagnosed with terminal cancer. It was an easy way to let him and his household know that we were thinking of him even though we were far away. We now have five. We stay connected with my daughter and her new husband, and are now in the process of adding our nephew and our daughter's in-laws to our network. The lamps themselves are very lovely and people often ask about them just because of their unique design. Truthfully I am surprised at how fond we have become of them, they have a way of becoming a wonderful part of the fabric of one's life.

When this lamp works it is truly amazing and in a previous review I gave it 5 stars however, for whatever reason, I am having all kinds of trouble and there is ABSOLUTELY NO TECHNICAL SUPPORT WHATSOEVER. I am completely confused as to how to get this lamp to work again and have wasted the better part of the last hour trying to understand directions on the website to no avail. I wish there was a toll free number to call to simply walk me through what I need to do. Very disappointed and would NOT recommend to anyone who has no idea regarding internet related activity. EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED.

Comments about UncommonGoods Long Distance Touch Lamp:

My sister got a lamp for me for Christmas and one for herself as well. I am very sentimental and I miss the stuffing out of my sister because we live in different states. This allows us to communicate across the miles and say, "I love you, I miss you, I'm thinking about you" without speaking a single word. I love seeing the lamp light up, knowing my sister is thinking of me at that very moment. I honestly can't think of a better gift!

After receiving this as a birthday gift from our daughter, our other two children now have one, bringing the number to four in our circle. It's fun to see it light up as our granddaughters get home from school and our son's college roommates strive to maintain "their" color. This is a fun way to touch base with everyone!

Once you get these set up, they're fantastic. It can be a little complicated for those who might not be as tech savvy or familiar with wi-fi set ups. My friend and I both like the design of the lamp. We enjoy just being able to tap the lamp to say hello. It's a great way to say good morning, hey, or I made it home safe. I also enjoy being able to change the color with a simple tap. You could even come up with different meanings for each color of the lamp if you were so inclined (i.e green for good morning, blue for I'm home safe, etc). I like that you can also change the time the lamp stays lit. Mine is set for 1.5 hours and my best friend likes his to stay lit for 30 minutes. There is also a bed time feature where the lamp won't light during a certain time, but I couldn't figure out how to get that to work. Having this lamp is a nice way to say "I'm thinking of you" without calling or texting. It certainly brings a smile to my face every time it lights up, and it's a wonderful way of staying connected to those who are far away.

My best friend and I are across the country. We are very close and this made for the best Xmas gift ever. (Downside... what to get next year). She opened it, was confused, read the instructions and apparently started to cry (seasoned trauma nurse, her telling me she cried made me cry). So long story longer.... her kids love it! They are always changing it and than when we change it back get very excited!

The product does what it says it will do which is to send a spontaneous "thinking of you" to a loved one. Very cool. The set up was a nightmare. After numerous attempts and following the directions, I gave up and called for technical support. The entertainment while hold was a continuous monologue pitching the product that was very annoying. Come on, it was already purchased. The first call didn't work out because I was calling on the device I was using to set it up. The second call on a land line connected but was disconnected after a couple of suggestions. Usually tech support people stay on the line until the problem is solved. It turned out that unplugging the light and my router cleared the congestion of 50 attempts. It finally had a successful set up. So a 5 Star for the product and a 1 Star for directions and support.

Got this to keep in touch with my best friend who lives on the opposite side of the country. We each have different colors so we know who is saying hello. While there are a million ways to say hello this was a cute alternative. It also provides a nice glow when lit. It was easy to set up and you can choose how long the light stays on and what hours it will stay off should you choose to have it in a bedroom. Only con is sometimes it takes a few touches to select your color. Would definitely recommend!

I bought this as a Christmas gift for my parents. They live in another state. I thought it would be a fun way to say hello, I am thinking about you. We were all excited to get it set up. Unfortunately, it was kinda a pain to set it up. Once we got it connected we have been having alot of fun with it. It's has kept a smile on my face watching it change colors. My parents have been enjoying it too. It is exactly what I was hoping it would be. I am hoping that we don't have the "update needed" issue that I have been reading in other reviews.
