Rebecca Grace Jones was born into a family of artists in Hagerstown, Maryland. Encouraged to explore her creative abilities from the time she could hold a brush, she produced her first book of illustrated poetry in the second grade.
As an art major at Towson University, Jones studied graphic design and illustration. She received a BFA and began a career as a commercial artist. She produced illustrations for a variety of clients including Time/Life Books, National Geographic Society, Aerospace Corporation, Federal Express and Dupont. After returning to Towson for an MFA, she taught graphic design for 12 years.
When the computer entered the field of commercial art, Jones realized that she preferred a hands-on approach to making art. While in college she had acquired a loom and had taught herself to weave. One day she got the idea to cut up one of her abstract watercolor paintings and weave the strips into a piece of fabric. Happy with the look of this new technique, she decided to enhance the effect by writing words onto the strips.
