Your first glance at this handcrafted piece might have you thinking abstract art…and then you notice the beak. And the tail. Potter Sheri Bazany created her cheerful kitchen container as an homage to all the chickens she’s raised over the years and the other beautiful birds that frequent her backyard. The plump hen will roost on your countertop to hold kitchen essentials (salt, sugar, tea bags…) with cheeky charm, and make a splash at party time as a serving piece for salsa, dips, and other goodies.

Sheri Bazany has been creating with clay since she took her first pottery class over 30 years ago. Sheri is drawn to simple shapes that “serve a purpose, rather than just sit there looking good,” she says. Her studio sits in a small barn near Sevierville, Tennessee, surrounded by woods and streams. One tiny drawback to working in such a beautiful spot: the occasional visit from a curious Smoky Mountains bear. “I keep a big umbrella near my doorway to pop open when they come a bit too close for comfort!”

Care

Microwave safe, oven-safe. Though my glazes and clay are considered dishwasher-safe, I recommend hand-washing to preserve the glaze quality over time.
