Nature Study

Flora and fauna come to life in Jay Jones's elegant walnut and copper wall sculpture, which features a graceful arrangement of bare branches topped with flowers flushed in pink. The sculpture hums with winged admirers, who stop to pollinate the delicate blossoms. Whether perched on your wall or displayed in a prominent spot in your home, this lively arrangement will make any room bloom. Handmade in North Carolina.

Calmness moves Jay Jones. “I find that I’m most inspired when I’m in a museum,” he says. “Most of the time, I’m bombarded by noise and distractions. Museums are usually cool and quiet places.” That sense of stillness—and gentle movement—is reflected in his delicate copper mobiles. Jay’s pieces have been known to have a nearly hypnotic effect. “I was participating in a gift show when a girl of 5 or 6 came into my booth and just stood there looking at my work,” says the Greensboro-based artist. When her mother said she liked the mobiles too but didn’t know where they would put one in their home, Jay recalls, “The young girl said without hesitation, ‘Don’t worry Mom, the house will tell you where it needs to go.’”
