Twice as Nice

Composed of layers of sleek soapstone and rustic acacia wood, this handsome bowl set by Steven Chavez and Justin English keeps scoops of your favorite ice cream cold while protecting your hands from freezer burn. Pop the soapstone in your freezer an hour prior to digging in to prolong the chill and savor frozen treats for just a little longer on a scorching summer day. Or, if you'd like to keep dips, appetizers, and entrees piping hot, bake the soapstone in your oven instead. The soapstone used is reclaimed, so you may see a vein pattern, a-la marble. Made in India.

Due to the nature of this item, each is unique and will vary.

About 80% of all soapstone quarried is deemed waste or scrap material. In an effort to regain control of this waste and turn it into something useful, Steven Chavez and Justin English set out to clean up the quarries and find a purpose for the discarded stone.

Soapstone is one of the most effective natural materials on earth for conducting and retaining temperature, so Steven and Justin turned to these natural properties to handcraft a beautiful line of soapstone kitchen and barware. They've recently expanded into stainless steel, bringing the same level of sophisticated design and utility to entertaining ware. Their company is based in Denver, where the majority of the products are handcrafted.

Size is perfect, but wooden part a bit defective

I'm not sure why other reviewers feel the bowls are too small, they are the perfect size. I can fit 3 small scoops of ice cream. The soapstone bowls do an amazing job of keeping ice cream cold, we love them! The only downside is the outer wooden bowls are a bit defective. One bowl does not fit the soapstone well (a little lopsided), and the other wooden bowl was cracked. Regardless, I love these bowls!

I would not recommend this product

While one of the bowls (both pieces) were well constructed, the second wooden piece was left with a ridge where the blocks of wood were glued before turning and the inside was not cleaned out where the bottom of the soapstone bowl is supposed to fit snugly into the wood base. I had expected the product to be made in the U.S. and was really disappointed when the wooden part was manufactured elsewhere. It is almost as though a really great product became popular and so shortcuts were used to keep up production.
