Tangy & Sweet

Artist Melanie Mckenney finds her inspiration in nature - not the typical flowers and trees, but in the abundant textures and colors of ordinary fruits and vegetables.

In these sturdy, earthenware bowls she has captured the juicy tang of ripe grapefruit. She did so by using a slip-cast mold from an actual fruit to recreate the detailed texture of its thick, dimpled rind. The smooth inner surface is a perfect, delicious pink, segmented into the familiar pattern of wedged slices. For her creations, Mckenney uses only food-safe, non-toxic glazes that dish out all the delectable details of the edible original. Dishwasher safe. Not recommended for microwave, oven or stovetop. Handmade in Tonawanda, New York.

Due to handmade nature of the product, each is one-of-a-kind and will vary.

Unfortunately, this item cannot ship outside of the United States at this time.

Melanie Mckenney

Melanie Mckenney originally hails from Buffalo, NY. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from nearby Alfred University in 2006, but continued her training through numerous workshops, including study at the Studio Arts Centers International in Florence, Italy. Melanie helped to run a non-profit ceramics program in Lexington, MA, before returning to Buffalo, where she lives with her husband, daughter, and two dogs.

Melanie finds the inspiration for her functional pottery in nature, and believes that capturing those natural forms in clay evokes a new appreciation for everyday objects. Often taken for granted, fruits and vegetables display a rich variety of shapes, colors, and textures. By casting directly from the actual fruit or vegetable, Melanie is able to capture these in detail. Her line of Vegetabowlsc has been in production since 2010, and she hopes to promote local farming, healthy eating, and an appreciation for handmade housewares.

Comments about GRAPEFRUIT BOWLS:

I bought these bowls 'cause they were unique. Alas, they are on the smallish side. My set is, anyway. Maybe they differ? I'd serve nuts, candy, garnishes or dip in them. But, salad? Cereal? No go. And that's how I hoped to use them. I'm not even sure an actual grapefruit would fit in them (lol). Still, they're cute. Just not for everyday use.

    Comments about GRAPEFRUIT BOWLS:

I really want to like these bowls but they are just too small to accommodate a grapefruit half. Supposedly they were cast from actual grapefruit but those fruit must have been awfully small! Very cute design and (in theory) a good way to make eating grapefruit a special experience. Please consider re-casting these larger.

        Comments about GRAPEFRUIT BOWLS:

I just sent these to my mom for Mother's Day. She called to tell me how much she loves them! I told her that I had seen them in the catalog and thought she might like them because she loves to eat grapefruit. She said that they are absolutely beautiful in person. What a great gift! I just wish I could have afforded to give her the cantaloupe bowls as well.

It looks like the picture, but it is much smaller than expected. However, I didn't check the sizes, but since the bowls are unique I kept them.

*We are mostly using them for ice cream, but but plan to also use them for yogurt, and other small treats of the like.
*They are too small for the gigantic pink grapefruits that we buy, though we did balance them in there somehow one time :-)
