Life in a Fishbowl

Did you know that goldfish can distinguish between individual humans? Your goldfish knows you, and that's why he swam to the front of your bowl to say hello. JoAnn Stratakos's friend's grandson, Ethan, age 7, loves to draw. He created this friendly finned fella, and she made him into a bowl. She starts by throwing a hunk of stoneware clay on a potter's wheel, smoothing and forming the shape. While it's still raw, she creates the slightly three-dimensional elements: fins, funny fish face, and bubbles. After it's fired in a bisque kiln and sanded, she paints and glazes it by hand and kiln fires it at 2,000 degrees. That's a lot for a little fish to go through, so treat him tenderly. "As an artist," says JoAnn Stratakos, "I tend to make things I like, things I’d like to have around me." To that personal direction, she adds years of experience that inform each piece of pottery she makes in her Pocono Mountain studio. Each piece is hand-dipped in glazes that JoAnn has formulated, giving them subtle variations and unique character. The color and shapes are designed to compliment, not compete, with your decor and cuisine.
