Life in a Fishbowl
Did you know that goldfish can distinguish between individual humans? Your goldfish knows you, and that's why he swam to the front of your bowl to say hello. JoAnn Stratakos's friend's grandson, Ethan, age 7, loves to draw. He created this friendly finned fella, and she made him into a bowl. She starts by throwing a hunk of stoneware clay on a potter's wheel, smoothing and forming the shape. While it's still raw, she creates the slightly three-dimensional elements: fins, funny fish face, and bubbles. After it's fired in a bisque kiln and sanded, she paints and glazes it by hand and kiln fires it at 2,000 degrees. That's a lot for a little fish to go through, so treat him tenderly.
