"How fortunate I am to have found the medium of clay," says Parran Collery. From her little studio in Southern Maryland, she works with terra cotta clay to create relief-sculpted ceramic tiles and mosaics. Parran is curious about the ordinary things we see every day—birds, leaves, flowers, bugs—and these fascinations make their way into her designs. She also finds inspiration in art history, especially Japanese woodblock prints, in poetry, and in friends who are amazing artists, all of which provide the starting points for her designs. To create her tiles, Parran rolls out slabs of clay and begins sculpting to create a low relief design. Her pieces are then fired multiple times to achieve the final glazed surface. All of her glazes are her own unique formulas, bringing an intense lushness and sense of depth to her tiles. In all of this work, she strives to create compelling designs that invite people to love tiles.
