Make your own herbaceous gin and tonic from scratch with Janel Johnson's kit. Using your favorite vodka and sugar water as your base ingredients, split the set's carefully selected juniper berries, cinchona bark, botanicals, and your choice of add-ins between the two quart-sized mason jars and in about 36 hours you can savor your own custom cocktail. Assembled in Nevada.

Our Content Intern was curious about how to make gin without a bathtub involved. See how her experiment with the Gin & Tonic Making Kit turned out on the blog.

Janel Johnson

Janel Johnson's mom taught her to be resourceful and crafty, encouraging her to take on many do-it-yourself projects growing up, from cooking and sewing to woodworking and home remodeling. A botanist by profession who specializes in rare plants of the Great Basin, Janel's knack for creativity and knowledge of flora led her to make homegrown cocktail kits after she attempted to concoct her own bitters. She realized that there might be other people who want to experiment with making their own cocktail ingredients at home, so she created her DIY sets so that others could have fun experimenting without a huge investment.

Comments about UncommonGoods Gin & Tonic Making Kit:

This was a great gift for my honey on Valentine's Day! I gave it to him a few days prior because the process takes about 2 days to mix and set. I noticed there were a few additional ingredients needed to complete the kit and wanted to provide everything for the kit and set it up like a gift basket, but couldn't find the info online. I emailed UG and they gave me a semi-complete list. Below is my list:

Here is everything you NEED for one batch: 750mL of 100 proof neutral flavor vodka (80 proof works but may alter taste of gin), 3 lemons, 3 limes, 1 grapefruit (will be using the zest so try for organic and unwaxed), kosher salt, granulated sugar, sparkling water (I got Fever Tree brand Club Soda), cheesecloth or jelly bag, simple syrup (I just included a milk bottle with 1 cup sugar inside so he could make his own), and several coffee filters. There are also some optional gin ingredients like fresh pepper and fresh lemongrass that I left to the receiver to purchase.

The Gin & Tonic set was beautifully boxed and the instructions were very detailed (be sure to give them a complete read-through before starting). This kit makes 3 batches of each so it is a gift that keeps giving and one that can be improved upon each time around if you want to play around with optional ingredients.

All the spices smell so good and I am eagerly waiting to crack open the jars of our first batch! Cheers!
