How Deer

Travis Bruce Black's vibrant portrait of a doe and her dear fawn invokes the natural bond between a mother and her child. Completed on Father's Day, the artist created what he imagined to be the stag mule deer's perspective looking at his mate and their little one. Like a young child, the fawn--painted with fiery reds and bold maroon swirls--is spry, alert, and acutely aware of the world around him, while his mother--painted swaths of tranquil greens and blues--is calm and cool, fearing nothing with her offspring by her side. Made in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

location

New Mexico

Travis Bruce Black grew up in Michigan, where he studied fine art there with some extraordinary teachers. In 2005 he moved to Albuquerque to continue his education at the University of New Mexico. Afterward he and his wife Molly started a unique gallery in Old Town Albuquerque. During this 4 year project, Travis came to the realization that his craft wasn't reaching everyday people. Consequently he started focusing on nature paintings that had a universal subject from naturalistic world to act as a more open door for people while still allowing him to experiment with abstraction, color and structure. Black makes his living as a full time artist showing in galleries across the country. For Travis, living in the desert increased his appreciation for how precious and curious life and nature can be. His work became this oasis, the concentrated force of life, color and juiciness of nature.

Beautifully Unusual!

I have a favorite wildlife photographer in Gatlinburg, and I have several of his photographs of deer in the Smoky Mountains. I thought this piece would be an interesting complement to those beautiful photographs. I was absolutely right!
