Sit. Stay. Pose.

Pet people are a passionate breed. It's the kind of devotion that deserves to be put on display with an illustration by Stephanie Carter, who turns photographs of furry (or feathered or scaly) friends into portraits complete with regalia of their favorite things—like carrots or catnip or sticks. A proud pet owner herself, Stephanie draws the image on her tablet, then finishes the black-and-white digital print by nestling it into a white frame. Handmade in Vancouver.

Stephanie Carter has a simple mission as an artist: “I hope I can make you smile,” she says. As the purveyor of adorable pet portraits, she’s accomplishing that mission quite well. The Vancouver resident started her career illustrating for a local newspaper and went on to work in advertising and art licensing, but a kitty changed her forever. “I once had a cat named Scriddy who lived until she was 19,” she says. When she got married, she says Scriddy unfortunately didn’t take well to her husband. “As a result I am banned from cat ownership. Thus I must live vicariously through my artwork,” says the designer. And while she loves her puppy and guinea pig, she has a decided preference: “Long live felines!,” she jokes.

I bought this as a gift for my husband and had the artwork in the image of our cat Oliver. My husband just adores him and I thought he would love this as a gift. And he did! He almost teared up (ssshhh, don't tell him I told you that). The artwork is incredible, I showed a couple friends the artwork before I gave it to my husband and they were also blown away by how lifelike and beautiful it was! It's also in a glass frame with white trim. I will be ordering another in the near future of our other cat Manny.
