Copper Rain Gauge

This cool rain gauge employs Archimedes' principle of water displacement in an original outdoor accent.

Have Your Fill of Physics

The idea for this curious precipitation collector all started thousands of years ago with the simple question: "Is all that glitters gold?"

Posed by Ancient Greek King, Hiero II, to resident smarty-pants, Archimedes of Syracuse, the answer would change the world of physics, forever. Archimedes was summoned to ensure that the king's solid gold crown contained no lesser metals. The laurel-shaped headdress puzzled the thinker, since he did not know how to measure the crown's volume without damaging it.

Later, when he took to his tub he noticed that the water level rose as he entered the water and it lowered back down when he lifted himself back out. He suddenly realized how he could measure the volume of crown. According to legend, he leapt from his tub and ran through the streets of Sicily nude shouting "Eureka!" (Greek for "I found it!")

Centuries later, the World's Coolest Rain Gauge turns Archimedes' fantastically fun principle of water displacement into a refreshingly original lawn or garden accent. As the water flows into the copper collection flue, the buoyant, foam tube sealed inside rises to show water accumulation. Attractive and informative, this nifty pluviometer makes your backyard a little more interesting. Made in New Paltz, New York.

My husband is kind of a weather geek. Not scientific or exact by any means, but he likes to keep track of the monthly and annual rainfall, snowfall, temperatures, etc.

I can't tell you how many rain gauges we have been thru, because he insists on keeping them out year round. The glass or plastic gauge ends up breaking, or blowing away.

I wanted to get him a nice looking (not too girly, no frogs, flowers, birds, etc), sturdy, unbreakable rain gauge for Christmas. I did a Google search for "unbreakable rain gauge, and Uncommon Goods popped up.

It is REALLY nice looking, substantial, not at all flimsy. LOVE LOVE LOVE that it is made in the US, and in our neighboring county, no less!! Shop Local!!!

I also love the story behind it. That would be the one suggestion I have is to include the story on a postcard with the rain gauge. I copied and printed it onto a nice piece of stationary, rolled it into a scroll, tied a piece of ribbon around it, and put it in the box with the rain gauge.

I gave one to my husband and my Dad for Christmas. They both loved them, and enjoyed reading the history behind it. GREAT GIFT!!

We bought two of these because the design is so nice. We live in hot hot Texas and the mechanism that causes the gauge to float so you can read the rain level deteriotes and gets stuck so it stops working. We bought two replacement tubes and they didn't last more than a few months. So, if you don't live in extreme heat, it's the most elegant looking rain gauge I've ever seen. When it works, it's great. It's just too expensive for something that doesn't last.

Comments about UncommonGoods Copper Rain Gauge:

I first fell in love with this rain gauge about 20 years ago and purchased one for myself for our gardens when we lived in IL. It lasted for several years without a problem, until a raccoon discovered the Styrofoam float and decided to remove it and shred it :( I switched to a Jeffersonian gauge for the next 10 years. When we moved back to New England, that gauge moved with us but was on it's last legs. It finally gave up the ghost this spring and I turned to my old faithful (and favorite!) Copper Rain Gauge. Very few raccoons here on the Cape! I expect to enjoy this one for years and years as it patina's in the salt air. It really is just an artful addition to the garden when not measuring rain. Very visible from inside for an estimate as to the rainfall.

This is a great rain gauge. We were looking for something that was not plastic and that was attractive and this gauge certainly fits the bill. It can be seen from inside the house when it is pouring rain!

Demonstrated easy functionality with a cup of water. Indicator floated right up. Note: pour slowly like rain as it drains into the float area. Would likely buy for the far garden as well!

LOVE this for my father for Christmas. The only thing I was not happy about is the copper was not shiny and new looking when it arrived. I spruced it up myself - but when giving a gift you expect it to be clean. It only comes with ONE rain gauge (don't be fooled by the picture that shows 2). It also comes with 2 boxes. #1 shipping box and #2 item box so it can be wrapped. Thank goodness!
