Green on the Scene
Maker Henry Wischusen, designed this pair of intricate earrings out of respect and love for a common, easily overlooked plant. "I was inspired," he says, "by my weekly winter hikes, and seeing the green Lady Ferns dotting the forest floor. The young shoots and fiddleheads are a delicacy for grizzly bears, elk, and humans, and have been used to treat wounds and a variety of ailments."
To make these realistic-looking specimens, Henry and his team laminate together thin maple wood veneers, then cut, form, finish, and infuse them with chlorophyll— the substance the fern uses to convert sunlight to energy. (You guessed it: we're trying to make Photosynthesis Fashion a thing.) Handmade in Peachtree Corners, Georgia.
