Glass artist Jim Loewer is inspired by Flaubert's ironic definition of art: "of all lies, art is the least untrue." But this much is true: his glass blowing is primarily self taught through a process of trial and error, and he loves the relatively instant gratification that comes with the process. A bit of a renaissance man, Jim has an undergraduate degree in painting, a teaching degree, and a law degree he obtained studying at night while making glass by day. Jim focuses on contemporary organic forms influenced by Japanese craft and the American studio glass movement.

I want to thank Jim Loewer for this beautiful piece of art. I had seen a magazine article about these suncatchers and intended to research them sometime; then I came across the very item at UncommonGoods. I am in love with the design, colors, size, and glass quality. The suncatcher actually catches the setting sun from my dining room window where it is hanging. This is a perfect piece.

I fell in love with this suncatcher in the catalog & had to have it. The reviews made it sound amazing & I dreamed of bouncing colors around my house once I hung in it a sunny, FL window. When it arrived, I was disappointed. True, it is very large (@ 8") but the colors were much muddier than I expected and it's so think, there's no streaming of the sun through them. Also, the red, green & royal blue that seem so evident in the catalog are barely noticeable in the actual piece. A lot of it looks black and/or gray :( There is also no cord or ribbon for it to hang from. Not a big thing, but that surprised me.

I thought this would be a craftman item like hand blown wine glasses but it looks like resin, not glass, and it's larger than a salad plate. I am so disappointed I showed my husband to see if he agreed we should return it instead of surprising him for Valentine's Day.
