Cute idea in theory
These bottle flowers were a cute idea, but hard to actually make it work. After the plants start to grow and the roots start to mature, the bottle is impossible to keep watered. The plant sucks up the water, but to replace, you have to drip it in because the dense roots at the top of the bottle block the absorption. I've put these under my dripping faucet for more than 20 minutes at a time. I've gotten buds, but now it's so hard to keep the water full, that I'm not sure they'll make it to full bloom. Bummer, I really wanted it to work. I wouldn't waste the money (or time!).

Such a fun way to liven up keepsake bottles
Mom absolutely loved it - we have these keepsake wine bottles from our Cape Cod family vacations and after her bottle tree bit the dust, she didn't have any way to show them off. So this gift really will keep on giving. Slam dunk. :-) #sweepstakes

Fun gift for mixologist/plant dad! #sweepstakes
This accompanied a Grow Your Own Cocktails kit as a Christmas gift for a friend. He loves plants and loves making drinks, so this perfectly combines two of his hobbies. #sweepstakes

Very cute!
My daughter loves to garden but is in college and doesn't have a lot of space. This is a great gift and she absolutely loved it! I would definitely give it to someone else.

Plants did not mature and survived only a couple of weeks.
I ordered these as a birthday gift in March. We did put on bottles in May. Only two of the seeds germinated. However, the plants never matured. They died in few days. Really disappointed.

Great gift for mother in law
My mother in law is all about recycling. She was excited to grow her own herbs and loved having a use for leftover bottles.

Are the seeds Non GMO?
Verified reply from Jen
Hi there! Great question, yes they are!

Why is the statement "protects against 'harmful' red and blue light" included in the How It Works? I was unaware of this problem and when I looked it up I could find no info about harm caused by red and blue lights on the roots, nor on the leaves (obviously).
Verified reply from Coralie
Light is indeed helpful to the top part of the plant. In fact, it is essential for photosynthesis. Our use of the word 'harmful' relates specifically to the bottle. You see, inside the bottle we have water + a lot of nutrients. The only thing missing to cause an algae bloom is light. We therefore want to limit the light that gets into the bottle. Have you ever heard the term "wearing rose-colored glasses"? Basically rose colored glass only lets through rose-colored light - everything else gets blocked. Ditto green glass and green light. It is important to prevent algae growth in the bottle because algae will consume the nutrients which would otherwise be available to the plants.

Does it have to be a tall wine bottle or can a shorter bottle with a cork be used?
Verified reply from Amy
A shorter bottle is fine! The makers suggest you aim for 16-32 oz. The smaller the bottle, the more often you’ll need to refill the water inside.

Will you need to add more water during the plants' lifecycle, and if so, is it easy to remove and re-insert the pods?
Verified reply from Merve
You don't need to water this little crop: just watch the everyday magic of germination and growth! Also, if you're relying on natural light, planting in spring or summer is recommended. For year-round growing a grow light can be used.

can you use clear bottles for the herb garden?
Verified reply from Melody
Yes, of course! The stoppers are intended for empty wine glass bottles, so it would be perfect if you can get your hands on something like that.

Are the garden inserts re-usable? Would I put new potting soil in the insert when I am re-planting after an herb plant has run it's course?
Verified reply from Melody
The inserts are reusable but the soil in the inserts are not. You can buy replacement soil here: https://www.geturbanleaf.com/product/smart-soil-replacement-kit

Could you try planing other seeds instead? Not sure how much I would use lemon balm. Any recommendations? Thanks!
Verified reply from Alice
Sure you can! This is an effective growing medium for all herbs, so I recommend cilantro, mint, or rosemary for starters (just because those are my favorites.) Any herb you use a lot, or wish you could use a lot, that's the one you should pick!

Once harvested, do the plants continue to produce additional sprouts of the herb?
Verified reply from SiRandal
Greetings! Thanks for your question. Yes, the plants can continue to produce additional sprouts throughout the year with proper care. Please note: If you're relying on natural light, planting in spring or summer is recommended. For year-round growing a grow light can be used. And, the bottle is not included with purchase. I hope this info helps you. Thanks for your purchase and Happy Holidays!

Approximately how long is the growth period when placed in good light?
Verified reply from Alice
The seeds should sprout in approximately 2-7 days, and reach maturity after about 4-6 weeks.
